Don’t hold your breath for a new S2000!
Hi guys.
Thought I would share this after reading it… always a speculative subject but it seems pretty clear here that, although desirable, Honda think that building a new S2000 would just be too expensive & would be too niche!
https://www.autoblog.com/news/honda-refuses-to-share-s2000-revival
I for one would selfishly be happy to see the S2000 to remain a ‘one off’ classic & not become unrecognisable from its DNA like the Cup-Racer (CUPRA)

There are surely no pure ice cars in development now
I read the new 911 is 1800kg and concluded the new sports car and supercar is almost dead
1800kg is a ****ing fat SUV. Yes I am sure it is quick but it weighs as much as a veyron FFS.
I'd think a hybrid s2000 won't appeal much, apart from the fact most are atkinson cycle so sound like a bag of spanners rolling down a hill it will add weight and mean slush box.
That's not to mention they just iterate the numbers, S600, S800 etc
So an S3000 with no gears and 300hp hybrid? Not for me
For purists now the only choice is used for a fun car.
My 'last daily' the CTR will see me off all interest if it lasts as well as the S2 did. Then I'll get something which drives itself and sit in the back lol

Can you imagine an mx5-e?
I can't imagine Mazda stooping that low - nor can I see other proper sports cars adopting batteries and weight, to deliver thrills, balance and character.
What was once a dream I'm afraid will be shelved by Honda... Unless synthetic fuel really takes off.
Time will tell .. At the moment, anything new ICE related is doomed

MX5 crowd will invade a factory over something like that
The one mfgr that has managed to still build a new version that weighs the same as the first version, so I figure they will just kill off the MX5 before they try to make some hybrid monstrosity. I agree that we have seen the end of a lot of the type of cars we love. With a ton (and I mean a TON) of advancement in electric powered options we can still see some fun cars but still not what we all love about the S2k. I dont see light and nimble coming again for a long time.
With weight, far too many nannies, un-needed complexity, etc I am already well past me being very fond of new cars. Which is why the new to me truck I just purchased is a 2017
Maybe it is time to start snatching up some of the actual fun, small cars we all like now before they skyrocket in price due to no other new competitive alternatives!

My CTR purchase was based on some of that
1400kg is not light but it feels good and is probably as light as you will find for that size of car now
Engine is strong
Gearbox great and manual
Grip levels outstanding
All the feedback and feel is very on the money
I plan to keep for a decade or more. Then I will be mid 60s so who knows, a self driving Tesla I guess
Meantime off to the classics show at the weekend, more my bag these days

I was at my usual 1st Sunday of the month last week... As usual, plenty of nattering to like minded owners. Tvrs, old porkers, triumphs, XR2 / xr3i, pug 106 / 205.. 3 x s2000s there.
And ya know - there's barely ever been a time where someone will come along and hanker after an S2000, or used to have one. Because I have a very tidy example, it gets alot of attention.
The chap in the Silver 12 reg Porsche 911 Turbo (hardly a classic) was taking to me for ages, and really respects our old S's. I asked him how much to service his, he said he had no idea. He'd just bought it 3 weeks ago as a gift to himself! Good job that mate haha.

Honda won’t produce another S2000 I don’t expect, so look after yours, we’re pushing 70, ssh, and hoping the S2 will last us out,
MG had Cyberstar at Murrayfield recently, looks ok but big and heavy, 2 tonnes, and around £60k, still to see one on the road and salesman wouldn't tell me how many have been sold to Joe Public and how registered by MG.
Watching the telly at the mo and Nat Geo doing a feature on Ferrari hybrids!

Everyone will have a different view on whether they should bring it back or not - I’m personally 100% against it… for me I want to see it grow in legendary status as the years pass rather than morphed into a fat hybrid!
Once 2030 hits and full combustion goes forever the 2nd hand combustion market will get drained and cars like this will soar & be in high demand no doubt.
We are the lucky ones

It would be a money losing venture for Honda, they can't stomach losing money on any of their model lines. To me it is worth losing money on a car model to attract new customers to the brand but today's bean-counters would not agree. I think the NSX was pretty risky for them, the new Prelude will sink like a stone, so they won't build an S2000.
Subaru and Toyota pulled off a magic trick building off the S2000 recipe for the BRZ and GR86 , and keeping the costs of those vehicles inexpensive. They are modern versions of the S2000 with increased interior room, modern safety features, and a fixed roof, all good to me. I have a BRZ and could not ask for anything more out of it, the price is right and it feels much like my S2000.
