I certainly would strip it down given the opportunity and the fact it hasn't run in 3 years. Those journals would almost certainly be dry.

Would be worthwhile reading Daytona-Daves post on here "resurrecting a legend" very useful insight to these!

Have a look at Chippo's thread to see what is involved with bearings. These things are practically racing grade...

If it ain't broke, don't break it.

Lapping valves/checking bores should be doable.

You do have to be very careful with big end and main bearing shells, the tolerances are very tight in fact at the limits of plastigauge .

also you don’t just order a set of shells , they come in all different sizes , the info for these sizes are stamped on the block and crank , and they vary bearing to bearing , these sizes were determined in the factory at build , the crank journals were very consistent measured with mic , but the sizes did vary and we ordered the right ones.

I read somewhere their are differences with some sensors etc. again someone will be along to confirm that. As for needing new retainers, the ones from the donor engine should be fine if you decide to use your original head.
the only difference i have noticed so far is that the 2003 block dosnt have the nock sensor just a bolt pluging the hole.
think i will still buy ap2 retainers as a peace of mind.
i would get the oil checked but i have no idea how log it has been in the engine.
from what you guys are saying about the bearings i may leave it all as is.
Anyone have the link to where i can read up on the changes made to uk engines for 2004 onwards.

To be honest, the whole engine looks like a race design scaled up a bit for reliability, almost every bit of it is artwork. Bar some of the flashing edges.

Yup - it's one of the things that made me decide it was perfect for such a roadster!
