Default exhaust wrap? should i?

ok ill going in to the reason why i might be doing this first.

i had a heat shield rattle on one of the heat shields in the engine bay so i thought id find out which one it was (big mistake). the rattle was soo annoying i just wanted to get rid of it so i proceeded to remove the bolts from the heat shield, 2 of them had almost non existing heads on the bolts (rotten) and one ceased. i had to grind the heads of the bolts to get the shield off as a spanner or socket in this world would not fit these bolts.

so now im left with my exhaust and no heat shield, the only way i can think of keeping the heat back from the other components is to wrap the exhaust with the fibergassy type heat wrap you see on some cars. i know it looks ugly and maybe i should get a new manifold but i dont want to do that just yet until i buy a new system (still deciding on which one i like).

please can you guys give me some pro's and con's to fitting this material?? any advantages or disadvantages to doing this? apart from the fact that i need to keep the heat out of the engine bay?

thanks

I reckon go for it, you hear all sorts of tales about it being bad in some way or another but it's not like you have any option The OEM manifold looks quite easy to get wrap around all the runners and personally I think it would make a good cosmetic improvement.

I've got wrap on my manifold and down pipe, and never had any probs with it,it definately makes a difference as I can get my hand very close to the down pipe,I personally think it looks better than coatings(if done right)
I think you have to get a decent brand though(dei etc)as my sister wrapped her downpipe/full exhaust(vx220 turbo) and after a while it went brittle, not sure what brand she used, but it wasn't dei.

I guess the gasses reaching the cat will be a little hotter, but I don't supose that will make any difference, might shorten the life of the O2 sensor a little.

wrap keeps the heat in the manifold assisting with gas flow. Itll also help reduce engine bay temps, consider bonnet raisers??

ill be wrapping my hks manifold and considering spraying it with a heat paint before wrapping. it comes with a heat sheild to so it all helps.

I looked into bonnet raisers, and after reading a few threads,it appears it has an opposit effect.
They went into some scientific explanation for the reasons why?cant remember what.but if you search in google I'm sure you will find what I read.

Also i find using locking wire easier and neater to secure it in place.as it's hardly noticeable .probably cheaper than the proper ties aswell.

Make its secure as near the steering column, wrapping round that may cause a problem
