Red face Eyes wide shut

I considered myself aware of cost implications of the S2000 @ 15 years old in November with higher levels of maintenance and looking to get it back to a younger self :-)

However the wishbones took some getting out according to my mechanic! Got all the discs diamond cut, new pads, aligned, drop links replaced, full diagnostic of engine...

so £500 a year doesn't cover it...

Double that before consumables I reckon......and regular servicing...

Not sure if it's going to rise by that each year

Pah! My 18 year old MY99 got a new roof with glass upgrade in August.

Replaced the under seat sub with a new one and 4 tyres replaced in June.

Got the spare set of calipers blasted and powder coated, awaiting rebuilding with new rebuild kits.

Then new discs and pads to go on with them.

Wheels to be refurbished.

Both rear arches to be cut back and new steel welded in and painted.

Leather bolsters to be refurbed on the drivers seat.

Service will be due by the end of the year and it had its mot the other week.

Worth it though.

I remind myself that the money i spend on it each year isn't monthly PCP payments frittered into nothingness. The car doesn't owe me a penny these days and hasn't for a few years now. It is the car I've kept the longest by some margin.

totally agree unc, tco and all that.

i doubt mine has depreciated for the last 4 or 5 years by more than £1k whereas a newer shitbox would have had me reaching for prozac and god knows what else years ago. Relative bargain then.

aye..

Just I recall my first one from 99 to 2003....

1 set of tyres and 3 services....

ADE, if you can get a diamond skim then new pads all round was less than £80 and honestly its like new!

Roof was done a few years ago. Tegiwa radiator, as originally was shredded...definitely something to look at if you are at 10 years or more

New Tyres this year...but they're consumables, alloys refurbed prior.

TCT is next on my list..

£500 a year, for some of us that doesn't even cover the road tax.
Like I always say, if you can't afford the running cost you have bought the wrong car.

Happy as Larry and haven't been able to wipe the grin off my face for days now despite - maybe because of - my fantastic luck for the sump plug to drop out on my forecourt after going to fetch my new S from Amersham just over a week ago. Been a long time since I used to look back on my car after parking it. And now I sneak into the garage just on any excuse

Only slight cloud is the DVLA wouldn't play nice with my enquiry where my original S plated S200ORC lives now.

I didn't realise you'd gone back to a sensible car, Rog!

You could always upset the DVLA - is ARS 1E for sale anywhere?

Good thought Nick, no, nothing like ARS1E or AR51EEE was available but I am pleased with what I found

The reason I traded the S2000 for the GT86 was because of how much it was costing me to keep it running as an every day car. I was only a moderate breakdown away from it wiping out the difference to the new car.

In my final year of owning I spent around £1500 on maintenance work to keep it running (MOT/Servicing/2 x new rears/failed slave and master clutch cylinders/weeping radiator repair etc) If that value hit around £3000 (the wishbones would have been problematic if I needed geo doing, there were some odd rattles from the exhaust/cat and at 112,000miles something expensive was probably looming somewhere) then having a brand new car with warranty paid for itself.

It ain't cheap running an old car!
