This really is a great achievement, my sceptical self want's to say : give it a few more thousand miles!!!

Have you done much analysis of the engine, ie compression tests, bore inspection etc. Given the work you put into the engine and the attention to detail - it would seem you have produced a winner!

Hi Nomadicss2k

"my sceptical self want's to say : give it a few more thousand miles!!! " My sceptical self recons that the journey so far is but a decent roadtest: Of course it could go bang at any moment, just like any of the other F20C's that are out there. I was happy with my processes and happy with those from whom I bought the engineering services. I'd say the proof pudding is moderately well cooked at this stage.

If anyone is unlucky enough to have major engine trouble, the 2nd and route is an option. But, based on the strip down I did, the condition of a 90-100 k mile engine is definitely a worry. Undoubtedly, the valve guides are potentially a big risk area. The valve guide on the engine I did were very well worn (this vehicle had a full Honda service history). Worn guides, I suspect, may be one of the causes of heavy oil consumption, carbon build up, detonation and is likely to contribute to dropped valves. The first s2000 car I looked at (for my project engine rebuild) had dropped a valve. The upper part of the valve stem was still present in the retainer - the head had 'dropped' off.

Regarding 2nd hand engines, there are a few just now on a well known auction site. One currently at £3650. This has quite low miles, quoted at 58000. Another at £3200 (same miles) another at £3700 on 67000 miles, another for £3800 on 90000 miles. One at 114000 for £2900 with a gearbox. The last two candidate engines should really be stripped and refurbished by the new owner to protect their investment. At this base price, the additional strip, fit and refurb will push the engine in the £5,000+ bracket.

There were/are some myths surrounding successfully rebuilding the F20C engine. With the supply of 2nd hand engines being somewhat restricted, and the price (and mileage) of these increasing steadily, the rebuild route will have to be explored by more people.

Cheers

James.

Now started doing mine may take a few months or years ! £s to $ doesn't help !!!
as said buying a second hand engine is a worry.and paying £3-4K for a pre facelift with no comp test or leak down test!!
looks like a MID sleeve for mine as dry liner was not recommended,
Using non Oem pistons & rods as I have no option maybe Wiseco,CP or JE 11.1 ish & Crower rods
new Kings bearings inc thrust
Honda head gasket
re-lap valves and new seals and much more......

Definitely a cheaper and easier option, if a little less interesting!
