Wink The First 2 Months

Thanks to 6 months of searching on Piston Heads, reading almost every post on S2K ownership this forum has to offer (thank you all) I finally picked up an '02 GT at the end of July. Just thought I would share my findings on 2 months of ownership thus far with all of you.

1. Buying privately was definitely the way to go. It takes a bit longer as you can only look at one car at a time as opposed to a dealer forecourt. However, you end up getting to know more about the car and its owner and most S2K owners are more than willing to give you their time to make sure you're happy with everything.

2. When buying privately, do not use a Bank Draft/Cheque! It still takes the same length of time to clear the seller's account so you may as well write a personal cheque and save

4. I took the car to France for 2 weeks 3 days after buying it and have the following to say. They do not drive S2000s in France. In 2 weeks I saw a grand total of...none. Monaco/Cote d'Azur excepted, sports cars are a rarity there so you get a lot of thumbs up and nods from the locals when you rock up in an S2K. The Pyrenees (especially Andorra) have amazing driving roads and are sparsely populated. Give them a look. French drive really fast on motorways so you get to stretch your motor's legs especially with 9000rpm to play with
They do, you just need to know where to find them

Although you are half right. In the UK the sales figures are around 7-8000 units where in France they have only shifted something like 700, couple that with the size of their country and it does appear that there are none whatsoever.

I agree that the effect is good though when driving in France, it's like you're a rock star or something with the looks that you get.

5. 1 litre of oil every 600miles!!!

Change the oil from Honda to another decent brand, I traveled 1500miles around Wales last week and only used 200ml. I use Motul 300v, expensive to buy but a lot less top ups

Is that correct because that's a lot of oil even for the S?

If it is then i'd be considering a set of Krank vents to reduce oil consumption and querying it at the next service.

Must admit I've done 1,500 since service and I have used no oil. Pehaps it's because I am an old duffer and don't that often

04+ engines are a LOT better in the oil-usage dept

Unfortunately that is the rate of consumption. I am having the 45K service done a little early as I think it's a bit high, even for an S. I polished the exhaust tips a few weeks back and they are black already so I must be buring a lot of oil out the back.

Pardon my ignorance, but what are Krank Vents, where does one buy them and are they a DIY install?

I only drive it 1-2 times a week but they are hard miles so maybe having it sit there all week is causing issues.

Had my 05 serviced on Friday. A 14K engine and a 9K service, used less than 100ml in that 9K and it gets driven hard.
Check the breather system for blockages.

As for 'decent' oil I have found that thin synthetics seem to vanish quicker. i have witnessed this on my high big bore bike engines and latterly on my tuned Impreza turbo. Switched both from castrol magnatec to expensive Mobil synthetics and seriously regretted it!

Get a friend to follow you whilst excercising the car. Smoke on the overrun (high revs downhill, throttle shut for example) could indicate valve seals or guide wear, regular blue smoke on hard acceleration may be worn piston rings / bores / oil control ring faults.

One is easier to fix than the other!
