Default First weekend with Car... BIG PROBLEMS...

OK... so some of you may of read how on Thursday I picked up my S2000 - 07 Navy Blue - 89 miles on clock...

It had 2 little problems... 1- Stereo needed a code 2- dashboard looked like a broken casio digi watch...

Well day 2 with the car was much better - the dashboard was ok and I thought nothing more of it. That is until Saturday night 11.30pm...

During the day I had a replacement stereo put in it... a Nice BT JVC unit. However after picking the car up, the mechanic said 'the engine light has come on. It either has a low battery or needs a reset from Honda'

Unfortunatley I had the drive the car again later in the evening... 5 mins into the drive (I was on the A338 dual carriage way) on the way out of the Bournemouth. Heading down the dual carriageway - the stereo turned itself off - the the dashboard died - this was followed by the power steering cutting out then THE HEADLIGHTS switched off!

Luckily I managed to get the car into a lay by... and called Honda Assist - 1 hour later a mechanic turned up.

Any advice? Any one have anything simular happen?
He told me the battery was fine - but for some reason it wasn't charging and was just eating power. So its not the battery...

So of course the car needed to be carried away. Another 1hour later a AA Flatbed arrived and the car is now on its way to my local Honda dealership.

Suffice to say I'm fuming - I am in total love with the car. I've only had it 3 days...

Also the guy on the end of the line from Honda Assist made me laugh....

Me - 'Hi My Honda's broken down, no power to the car at all'
Honda Assist 'Whats the plate sir?'
Me - 'LM07 ***'
Honda Assist 'Oh a S2000, is it fast sir'
(bearing in mind this is 60 seconds after the incident)
Me - ' No, no at all, infact it won't even bloody move!'

Sorry to hear about this

Could the dealer not provide you with the stereo code instead of you having to buy a new one?

Sounds like the alternator is not charging the battery, but that wouldn't explain why it died when you were driving it They must have been some kind of short in the wiring system for that to happen. Maybe a problem with a poor earth maybe. Sorry I'm guessing a bit.

I've not heard of anyone else on hear having this kind o problem. fingers crossed the dealer can track down the fault.

Sounds like a dodgy fitting to the new stereo

alternator?

if it shorts out it will suck all the power and kill the car basically.
another common issue is the main relay on honda's. (although that tends to be on alot older ones - CRX, civic's, 'ludes etc where the solder gets a dry joint)
i'd also sugest a bad main earth point aswell.
is it also possible it's a faulty ecu?

hope it gets sorted and this isnt a start of a long painful relationship with your S - they are pretty damn reliable as any honda is.

using a cable for earth that shouldnt be earthed, pinched wiring? not much room behind the headunit.

On the subject of the dash, mine has a large patch of condensation in the cluster when I first saw it. It had been sat for some time, a blast with the heated on (I bought in Nov 06!) soon cured that and it has never reocurred.

just re-read the OP - has the dash and lights started working again, or are they still unpowered?

alternator issue is usually a temporary thing. it will cut out and dye, but will majically start working shortly after.

if power is still all off - the fuses ok? some under bonnet, near battery; others under driver-side dash (immediately above accelerator pedal)

Well funny you say.

The power did come back, but then it went again and then back and then away (and so on...) But no I wouldn't say it looked underpowered since the 2nd day when it had seemed to of fixed itself.

Its weird because the dash was screwed first couple of days... then it fixed itself. Its seems ok now. However the main problems came after DriveTime in Bournemouth fixed a new Stereo to it.

Well its with Honda now so will know more over the next couple of days. Will post and keep those interested updated!

Did the dash lights play up when you turned the headlights on?

The first day I had it yes...

But not after the 2nd day.

I presumed this was because the car had sat still for so long and the battery needed to re-charge itself.
