Default Hood / Roof replacement at Monsoon

Hi Everyone,

Just spoken to Monsoon - I have a 2001 'S with the OEM roof on. They've recommended I DONT go mohair and go with the Twillweave for replacement, as apparently the roof frame is more prone to movement than the newer cars, and can cause premature wear on the mohair!?

First i've heard of it. I've booked my slot in for next week, but I feel a tad dubious about what i've been told, and would definitely prefer the look of mohair if it isn't an issue.

Any suggestions?

My first Monsoon mohair roof needed replacing after one year as there was bad wear (MY02 car) which they did for free.

Some other comments here: https://www.s2ki.com/forums/uk-irela...-hoods-931929/

If I were doing it again, I'd go with twillweave/vinyl (which is what gbduo did (see the penultimate post).

Monsoon fitted my Twillweave this time last year. Its still mint and because vinyl is OE IMO it looks better than Mohair.

Had the roof done at Monsoon yesterday, went with the mohair. Over the moon with the result - great bunch of people there.

I had my roof from Mondoon a tad over 2 years ago. They didn’t fit but a respected company in Bradford did. Nice people at Monsoon but can’t pretend I am not disappointed that:

1. The rear window is a different design to OEM (57 plate glass window) and it seems a lot smaller; and
2. I noticed on Sunday that the rubber seal is separating from the roof. Not sure if this is part of the roof supplied by them or glues on during fitting. Need to look this weekend.

Mines the vinyl. It’s ok but doesn’t seem to come back as clean or fresh looking as an OEM one.

Not measured mine, and not noticed a difference, but you might be right and we've gone from very poor visibility to slightly less, very poor visibility I fitted a vinyl one myself last year and the quality was really good on the bits you don't see as well as the bits you do.

There are no rubber parts that come with the roof, chances are it'll just pop back into its rails where it wasn't quite seated properly during the refit, they can be a bit of a fiddle to get them fully into the channelling.

This thread suggests there might actually be value to buying an OEM item - particularly with the discussion about the glass.

Lings list it at £1,860.28

The OEM glass seems larger because it sits "on top" of the vinyl. The aftermarket roofs have the glass sandwiched between the cloth making it look smaller.

The size has to be fixed so as to allow the roof to bend/fold in the right place.

Now I follow.

Having had a Monsoon Mohair hood on my AP1 before with a glass screen, I can confirm that for me, it was a massive improvement over the OEM hood with the plastic screen. Monsoon also fitted mine and to be honest, made it water-tight.

I'll be going back to Monsoon after that OEM price.
