[QUOTE=Sparky7,Sep 16 2007, 04:37 PM] The noise on mine stays with the clutch depressed, so you would actually think it's not the gearbox. As i am not very mechanically minded, can you clarify that point for me.
i.e can it be the outshaft bearings, and is this a job that a gearbox specialist could fix.
I had a quote to "fix"the noisy bearing and fit a new clutch for around

Interesting, my car has had the same for 2k miles, because it is out of warranty, Honda offered a replacement unit if I paid 60% of the cost.
Sounds as though this may be a feature on the car

Hi all
i have a strange whirring noise seems to be coming from the gearbox, if i put my ear to the gearleaver i can hear it more.
i changed the oil and put motul in last week and its made no difference. gearbox is working fine.
If i am coasting with the clutch in, or driving as normal the noise is always the same, any ideas would be very helpfull,
thanks

Thought it could be the clutch release bearing, had that and the whole clutch assy replaced under warranty (buzzing noise) but the whirring noise stayed.
Did 25k miles in the car and the noise never got any louder or any worse.
I think it was just a feature of the gearbox and i stopped worrying about it or noticing it. I have too much mechanical sympathy so hear every little new noise the car makes so i'm confident it didn't get any worse.

Ran the test with the car stationary. I can't hear the noise when i just bring the RPM up , so i guess it must be the output shaft.
I'll mention this to the mechanic when it goes in.
Cheers

First be sure the noise is speed related. Any rotating component that started to whine due to wear / damage will generally change the pitch of the noise with speed. If the moise seems to have constant pitch consider somthing vibrating as a likely cause.
If you only here the noise when the car is moving and it's pitch varies with speed you must consider gearbox, prop shaft, diff, drive shafts, wheel bearings, brakes. Any of these could give rise to a noise. Although given you can hear the noise through the gear stick it's likely to be something close to it . That said it's not immpossible for the noise to be transmitted through the drive train.
so eliminate the cheapest ones first.
Check the gearbox and diff oil levels
Check the brakes are not binding or that rust on the discs is not rubbing on the pads.
Check the wheel bearings.
Following that check the drive shaft UJ's and the prop shaft UJ's
All the above should take no more than 30 mins in any decent workshop.
If you still have not located the source of the noise start on the expensive items, gearbox and the diff.
It's probably worth repeating the point that's already been made. You do sit close to the transmission on these cars and they are not the most silent at any time.
It's is entirely possible that the noise is normal. If it does not get worse over time then learn to love it.

It's definately a speed related noise, no doubt. It's been getting progressively worse for a few months and is now actually distracting me from the enjoyment of the car.
The car is booked in Monday and I'll be sure to mention all of your suggestions to him before he starts the gearbox removal.
I'll let you know what the results are.

If so then you are only turning a few bearings and a shaft....
Jack the back wheels up and run it in gear for a listen, it's the only way to tell.
