Handbrake stuck / seized / just needs adjusting

Hi.
I’m getting the parts ready for my cars next service (oil, filters, pads etc) and one job I need to do it sort the handbrake.
At the moment, the first 6 notches on the lever don’t do anything. There is no tension to be felt at all.
can anyone advise what I migh need to fix please? Is it likely to be adjustment on the cable, or caliper issue?

thanks in advance

does the handbrake hold the car?

if so i'd imagine cable adjustment though you can check the movement of the pads, the rears are notorious for corroding and becoming siezed fully or partially

cable adjustment is under the centre console though i have never done it i will on my 2001 soon

Thanks
The handbrake does hold, but it’s in the back seat before it grips properly at the moment

Think replace pads and correct caliper adjustment may be first on my list

Adjusting the cable always fixed this for me.

Cables do stretch over time.

As long as there is no binding at the rear end, just crank it up a few turns.

Thanks all. I’ll check both cables are free and adjust on the back of the lever.
dont thinks it’s pads as they were done last year, so only covered 10k
