Always just washed and polished or waxed them along with the rest of the car , 16 odd years on still clear , and I don't do it that often.

I used the meguiars headlight restoration kit on mine (attaches to a drill) and it was markedly improved no end;

After:


And still looks just as good today

When doing the job I covered the surrounding wing/bumper with detailing tape and then put cloth tape (aka gaffa tape / duct tape) over the top of that to give it more resilience incase I had a slip of the drill.
