my heater is only blowing out cold air. I think thermostat is ok as car is reaching 3 bars. It did it on and off during MM but now seems permanently cold.
reading on the forum it may be something next to the firewall?? Some valve that is stuck?

Yes check that the heater valve is opening.
Here is a random picture with it turned 90 degrees (due to turbo) but you should at least get an idea on placement and how it looks

You'll find 'our' water valve on the other side of the engine bay, below the HVAC pipes below:

Heating, Ventilation and Air-Conditioning.

Those refrigerant pipes (with the blue cap) between the battery & inlet manifold.

If it got hot, it's likely an electrical issue, since the valve is controlled off the heater unit.

Are you sure you didn't accidentally knock the fan speed down to zero? I've done that...

There's a cable which runs from the heater valve in the engine bay goes into the firewall and then into the cabin beneath the passenger airbag. This wire has 2 hoops one at either end. Check the hoop is over the vertical part of the valve in the engine bay as it can slip off. If this is fine then remove the kick panel of the dash on passenger side and see of the hoop is connected to the horizontal bar which is connected to the moving apparatus. This apparatus is moved by a motor which is controlled via the heater controller.

bet one of your hoops has come off.

Most people don't know but the heater matrix actually has it's own self diagnosing feature. Search for the procedure.
