Default Helper Springs, good or not?

Figured it would be better to ask here, before heading on to the US forum.

Helper Springs, I can't help but think they are a poor addition to aid driveability... under high-load cornering you would effectively have two spring rates...

Opinions?

That's what Nitron said but Brian thinks they can work well with careful tuning [EDIT: Brian was referring to tender springs - see link below]. That pretty much supposes you have the time and choice of springs to fiddle for quite some time. Knowing the time it takes me just to get compression and rebound set up nicely, dependent upon ARBs and geo, I personally wouldn't want a further variable.

IIRC that wasn't helper springs, but there was some other term for springs that had an additional effect.

A helper spring should only to be to hold everything together when unloaded. It's a much lower spring rate than the main spring, and should be completely flat and have no effect under normal load.

I understand the workings of the helper and tender springs, and that valving the damper to those requirements is difficult. So I wonder how H&R could have matched the valving to the springs, while keeping their coiolvers at 1000 GBP....

I'm just trying to establish if I actually want them, based on other peoples opinions of them... I do a lot of motorway miles so that suggests I would benefit from the helper springs...

Exactly the opposite. You'd only benefit if you do lots of rally stages.

I think the point is that helper springs do nothing at all unless you get airborne James!

You can see the helper spring under the main spring. It's virtually squashed flat, and that's not under load. Once under load it's just like having a big washer in there - no effect at all.
