Default Hesitant, Backfire & No CEL

Hi all,

Went to use my s to drive to football yesterday and it was really hesitant pulling off.

It was searching when idling, and then i noticed a little backfire every now and again.

It was really hesitant when pulling off, and in any gear at under 2500rpm. After around 10 min, when warm, the backfire had stopped, and it was fine pulling of slowly. However when trying to pull of, with foot to the floor, it was really hesitant, again, fine after 2500rpm.

Its been standing for ages, and rarely used over the winter, so thought it might have something to do it that. So i took it for a spirited drive today.

Still the same unfortunately. Came back, thought all was fixed, tried to pull of with foot to floor, and again hesitant.

Its at 62500 now, some next weekend im going to change the plugs, along with oil & filter change, and anything else that needs doing. Didnt change the plugs at 54k, as i changed them at 27k.

Anyone had this before? any suggestions at what to look for?

I've look for any air leaks in the pipes, oil is fine. Stressed now

FAQ is good

I'd do your valve clearances.

Injector, map and lambda are up there too.

the map "should be" fine, as i bought a new TB about 2 years ago.

I've looked through the FAQ and it mentions the MAP is usually the problem of the misfire at 6000rpm.

My backfire only happens on tick-over.

I think i'll book it in to have the valve clearances check at my local garage (not honda!) I'll only mess it up!

Unless theres any friendly s owners local who have a clue what they are doing ?

Could be dirt in the map sensor, try taking it off and giving it a blow at a high pressure line

The map? Yes no probs to remove. They are normally philips head screw though. Just don't round off the screws. Use a good fit philips head and put all your body weight down on it before twisting hard. Good to replace them with cap heads if possbile.

I think the ones you mean are Torx type, but can't remember them being used on the MAP.

Also watch the o ring underneath gets reinstalled.

Thanks guys.

I'm going to take it off tomorrow and look at the map.

I've bought some carb cleaner to so though i'd give it a clean.

I've just bought some plugs, so i'll put them in also, fecking expensive plugs though!!

Well today I took off the MAP, cleaned it up,

cleaned up the TB with carb cleaner,

and changed the spark plugs, and all seems to be ok at the mo.

When i started it up after all this, it was a bit spluttery, and the revs were jumping around a bit, i put this down to my resetting of the ecu.

I took it for a drive, no hesitation. Then let it cool down and went for another drive, no backfire or hesitation

All seems ok at present, but will see again in the morning.

Just wanted to say thanks to everyone who's helped me in this thread and to the authors of other threads i've read on the problem.

Without this forum, i honestly wouldn't have tried anything, and taken it straight to a garage. These forums truly are priceless.
