The only product I have found which removes everything from the tailpipes - including tar - is JML Spotless (the universal household cleaning paste).

To quote: It is biodegradable & non acidic. It cleans all types of chrome, enamel, porcelain, ovens & cookware, sinks & baths, and vinyl & plastic garden furniture.

As you can see, it has a wide range of uses around the house, but what I like about it is that it does not damage the surface.

You go to the top right corner of the page where it says search and type in "tailpipe cleaning" then read through the eleven threads that come up.

EDIT- As I'm in good mood today download -

http://home.comcast.net/~michael.coh..._Hand_Book.pdf

and go to pages 50 to 52
