VGS = Variable Gear Ratio Steering.

Very helpful Honda press release/newspage

It's worth mentioning that a couple of people have spoken up about their steering racks suffering some type of failure - they were both VGS. One place in the UK had some experience of this problem and the fix was relatively expensive.

As usual, this is simply a rare technology and few places have experience so expect plenty of scare-mongering and the usual built with witchcraft style approach.

I recently uprated every component to do with the steering on my S2000, however I didn't fit VGS - that was only because I knew the rack and associated components were hard to locate and relatively expensive. If one comes up at a decent price, I'll buy it and install it.

Update:
I've actually just done a search on this, turns out a couple of people have had failures and as ever, plenty of scaremongering. If anyone has a failed rack they're going to bin with the associated control modules, I'm happy to strip it, find out what's wrong and document how I get on.

I wish you well. When ours failed we spoke to around 15 companies in the UK who 'specialised' in electronic power steering. None would touch the Honda rack due to the way it is assembled integral to the motor. We looked into converting it to non VGS. Again a LOT of work. Loom, ECU, SRS airbag, wheel and column to mention a few. A rack from SI at Hendy was around £14k. We found a Japanese supplier who could supply at around £4k, before shipping, VAT and duty etc. car was only worth that. So we sold it to a friend at a spares/repair price. We did eventually find him a second hand rack at a premium, from a guy on here in Wales who bent his beyond repair. It was priced accordingly considering we had never seen one for sale before . We went on to buy an 05 UK car, knowing a second hand rack is only about 150. Much preferred the steering on the VGS car though!

Thanks - I'm now officially on the lookout for a failed rack.

My grandfather used to service and rebuild power steering units on commercial vehicles so I'm reasonably confident I can find a resolution. If the used racks on ebay were 900quid I'd buy one to experiment on.

I have no issue with people going on about how something's better, but I'd prefer a side-by-side comparison with pictures (clearly that's more challenging with ECU modules).

There is a used rack on ebay now for £900...i would be very interested in a right up 'step by step' if someone decided to investigate the workings of the unit! i have a spare for mine that was sold to me in full working order..not that i want to tempt fate but for what i paid it was a steal in comparison...i spat my coffee out when i found out how much a replacement was from Honda
In terms of the VGS system i can't compare to a standard S2000 because i haven't driven one...it takes a bit of time to get used to Vgs but personally i absolutely love it..friends that have driven my car have commented that it drive's/handles like a go kart on steroids
I have seen two VGS broken for parts in recent years and another 1 or 2 for sale...one being around Cheshire area £10,000 ish if i recall correct and the other being an ap2 import with low low miles that was up for around £15,000 ish. i agree it would be good to have a more accurate number on how may there are around..

I intend to dis-assemble and media blast the entirety of my OEM steering rack as it is and document so this will give an ideal base reference.

I'll gladly fit VGS but I'll be buying a rack and stripping it first before installing it (if one comes up at a non-criminal price) - just another excitement to come.

Nice car. Would love to have a go in a VGS and see how different it feels.

Hi I just searched this thread after seeing the Black VGS on Plymouth Hoe yesterday (Route 38 café event).
Black with purple Advan wheels currently, so guess a local car K14xxx - Robbos?

PS I'm in a 3.4S porker so didn't bother bringing that up there pmsl!

If the pics are anything to go by it looks like it's taken a knock to the O/S/F - right on the wheel where it will transfer load through the rack - I'd want some kind of warranty with it at least.
