Default 245 45 16 getting rare in uk? Other options?

Hi Guys

New to the forum and S2000 ownership so hopefully hasn't been answered elsewhere (I searched but couldn't find anything).

Anyway, as I understand it, this is the size for non-OEM tyres on the original 16s? This size seems to be getting rare these days so I was wondering what you guys might be running on?

Will I need to switch back to 225 50 16 and if so, which would you recommend?

Car is my DD so not interested in track use. Would also prefer to stick with the 16s as they look better

Much obliged

Colin

You are running the wrong tyres (if you have Honda wheels) look at the tech FAQ its near the top of the list. Then do a search for the "tyre thread" loads of info there and opinions.

Thanks for the reply. I've already been through that thread and there is a consensus that unless you are running the original Bridgestones, different manufacturers are closer to 245 45 16. However, since most are running 17s and up, there's not a lot of info regarding current tyres in 16 inch.

Anyone currently running on the original 16s?

Many thanks

Colin

No, been 17" since they discontinued the 16"s. 225s are a bit 'wayward' in normal guises.

I see what you mean though!

Toyo Proxes are too soft-sidewalled for the car, so I'd avoid those. R888s might be a bit sporty for your purposes.

Pzeros are a bit OTT, but probably a very nice tyre!

Continentals - I have insufficient knowledge, other than they are Teutonically worthy, but dull. There was one fitted on my Leg End and I didn't like it much.

The consensus on 245s is incorrect and the Tyre thread and Forum Favourites threads back that up.

225/50 R16 is correct.

AD08R are available, and Blackcircles have Bridegstone RE002 in stock (or so it appears), and I'd recommend those, as per the Forum Favourites.

I recommend RE002 for 16", good alround tyre. Although next I would like to try the new Michelin PS tyres.

Ok, thank you for clarifying - I couldn't see that this had been addressed in the thread.

If that is the case then it opens up some better options.

Much appreciated all

As I no longer have OEM 16 wheels on my car I have no idea about availability of tyres in the appropriate sizes any more .
When I needed another new set of tyres in what must have been around 2004/5 I decided to try some thing different and slightly more grippy in the wet as the OEM S002 ,s were pretty skid matic in cold wet cditions and choose to go for Toyo,s ,
Research at the time suggested the OEM tyre was only made for the rear of the S and now other standard fitment , slightly odd in that the carcass was a 225 with a slightly wider tread block more in keeping with a 245. So I ordered 245 Toyo,s Irecall the aspect ration being 45 and not 50 , tyre height being relative to tread width . Now when the old S002 tyre was off the wheel and put (still had 3mm of tread) tread to tread with the new Toyo tyre the tread width was almost identical to within a mm or so
But many people over the years have, fitted 225 50, without any problems.

You ought to get good wet grip tyres on a daily. My SC one has AD08s and they are not at their best on a wet winter's day IMHO.. you can get abs kicked in very readily and I use it for a dopey school run, all sub 40mph

Does not matter if you edge up the width a touch

Indeed - the S-02s were a ~235 tread on a 225 carcass, in effect. I did post a measurement photo a long time ago - and I've just checked again!

The only downside of using a wider carcass on a standard-width wheel is it usually make the sidewalls feel 'floaty' - there is a reason for the 'Euro-look' of slightly wider rims. So you might not like 245s.

Having said that, when Honda erroneously fitted some Porsche 968-spec 225s S-02s to the rear of my car, it was oversteer everywhere. They were truly floaty. As were the horrid RE050as I tried in the erroneously correct 225 width. They lasted until my 17" wheels arrived...

Once caveat - I do find the AD08Rs a bit 'floaty' (if grippy!) compared to the original-spec Bridgestones RE050 MZs. If I had the choice, a supersport 'Stone would be it, as no-one seems to make concrete sidewalls apart from them. The downside is a very heavy tire and possible rim damage. Not that I care about that on our narrow lanes.

ETA; running the AD08Rs a couple of PSI higher at the back (and ditto the front on the NSX) helps a bit.
