I don't understand why people think that the s2000 engine will do the same mileages that other honda engines will do. It's a much more highly tuned power unit that revs higher than any other honda engine. We've seen on a number of occasions that the F20C with often let go once it gets to the 120-130k miles. I'm sure some last longer, but is certainly not an engine that will do 200k miles as a sure thing.
I'm sure the Top Gear survey has something to do with this

The top gear survey is for cars 3(?) years old. there are not many s2k's around that do in excess of 100k in 3 years, and if they do they'll be motorway miles, not vtec miles.

I'm sure mine averaged nearer 6,000 rpm for a lot of it.
Is that all?

And that's significat how? Are we only supposed to take that to mean the car is only good upto 3 years, after that who knows!? The car appears in the top 10 for build quality and reliability. Is it unreasonable to take that to mean the car will last a good bit longer than 3 years? That's not the sort of standings you'd expect to see for a car that's expected to fail around the 120-130k mile mark

I agree it amazing that the S engine gets anywhere near a normal engine as far as expected life is concerened. If you drive it hard then 100K+ miles is a bonus. Most S's probably only do 7K miles a year so 13 years for a race engine is not bad :-)

its significant in that the top gear survey only gives you an indication of the relability of the car for the first 3 years of its life. I'm not suggesting that the car falls apart after 3 years and yes the top gear survey gives the impression of the S being reliable, but it gives no impression of the longevity of the engine.

The reports of engine failures at higher mileages on here does give an impression, and regretably its the impression that the F20C is not a 200k miler like other hondas.

However it is unlike any other Honda engine isn't it. OK the othet Vtec engines are similar (do they last 200K miles I mean the top Vtec 200hp one?). That extra 1000 rpm really put stress on anengine I believe.

cricky! 125k-ish is a predicted engine life depending on how it's been driven!

what wears so much that the engine pops?

There's a few things to note here before we damn the S2000s residuals completely.

1. It depends how the cars been driven. I'm sure a normal mix of driving and the occasional foray into VTEC will see more than 120k. Hard driven or modified cars may see considerably less.

2. I don't know which board the rest of you have been reading but I have seen a range of engine blow ups from 25k - 125k. I certainly haven't seen a raft of engine blow ups over 100k - maybe that's because not many of us have hit 100k yet - but I've heard of enough low mile engine blow ups for it not to worry me about the mileage. Shit happens with these cars, and if you want one, it's a risk you have to take at any mileage.

3. Until Honda make VSA standard on the S2k, there will be a plentiful supply of engines at breakers for around
