Fantastic info - thanks so much for taking the time to share your recent experience, I think I may well be referring back to this when I give it a go
I will have a root around and see if I can do the job without removal, but I suspect it'll be a much cleaner job if i remove the bumper, i've done the front one before with the help of a mate and that wasn't too difficult - just sounds worse than it actually was

Rear bumper removal is a worrying task but is extremely easy to do!
The hardest part you will find is disconnecting the electrical clips (ask said!)

Done mine in situ with p40?p38? the red body filler <with surgical gloves on> taped it in correct position first and used fingers to apply.

Only takes literally 5 minutes to remove the rear bumper, even with tricky electrical connectors.
Rear number plate lights are changeable without removing the bumper, by the way. Depending on whether or not yours is pre or post facelift they twist out or the cover pinches off - accessible if you lie on your back / side
