Would have to be in circulating flow though Si or there's nothing suspended in the oil, unless you drain the lot. We have this prob on all our rotating equipment...
O ring extrusion is another possibility, and that would lead to a leak... Seen that before on higher pressure applications. You might not have seen part of it poking out of the filter?

If it was tight in the first place I cant see how the ring could blow out.
Unless it was pinched, or twisted or not suitably lubricated when installed.
Other options, wrong material or size seal, it's physical size. Measure it's seal face compared to the oem unit.
I have (many years ago) been caught with a supposed equivalent filter that had a seal face ever so slightly bigger diameter than that of the land on the car.
Just an idea now, if the Honda filter is normally tightened hard up with a tool, then perhaps the oem filter seals differ.
ie not so tall in the recess to avoid pinching when pulled down fully onto the face?
Most are done hand tight so it would possibly utilise a different seal.
Come to think of it, most I have come across have square section seals not 'O' rings....

The above are possible but I'm assuming there were no signs of a leak before the failure which a trapped seal due to installation would almost certainly have.
My current theory is the whole filter has deformed and pushed the flanges apart. The oil pressure acting on the seal then shoves it out of position

I spoke to Chris yesterday too. He's taken this issue very seriously, and has learnt a lot from it. I've told him to come and represent himself - he didn't think he was allowed to do that due to being commercial, but I said as long as he doesn't whore his wares he is fine to explain
