Mileage, Tyres and punctures.......(from the Thong forum)

We're back. Thanks to AquilaEagle for looking after us in between times.

Hopefully we can continue the research here now.

(copied from previous forum)
Do you reckon we could get a list going of total mileage covered in the S versus number of punctures suffered.

The main reason I ask is that I have removed the spare as it saves about 10kg and its got me wondering how the risk of puncture is affected by the 2 opposing factors that work on the S.

1. Much wider contact patch than average to hit nails etc.

versus

2. Reduced weight/load on the rubber to aid the piercing action.

By getting an average we can identify the luckier and also unluckier members of the forum.

1 slow puncture in rear in 12.5 K miles. None in fronts in 15K miles. Now at 17+K and no further punctures.

On my second set of fronts & rears now.
Clock has 17K exactly.

Rear puncture at <1000 miles! Only puncture I've ever had on any car.
No punctures since (in 3+ years with my S).

Also I didn't use the skinny.
The tyre walls are so rigid it drove fine (it wasn't completely flat). I just noticed the car wandering under acceleration. Had about 10psi in it when I got home and checked the tyre!

Also, if you use the boot, there is nowhere for the wheel to go, after all it won't fit where the skinny is. Kind of makes the skinny only any good for those with an empty boot or no passenger.

My tyre theory is that when they are new and "sticky" the fronts pick up debris and launch them at the rears. Therefore rear punctures more likely and larger surface area too.

Also depends on where you drive. My Dad has had 3 puntures in his Merc - all after he has been to the tip. I don't imagine anyone uses their S2000 to go to the tip though....

Nearside rear puncture at ~1,500 miles!
Nothing since, now at ~9,000 miles

one rear puncture after 4000km, large nail...nothing after further 7000km

No punctures :) at ~8.5k - fronts and rears original - rears look as though they will make 11-12k.

But then can't recall having a puncture in any car since ~'85 (had the sidewalls ripped out twice though (not the S) with debris on the mway :banghead: )

2,500 miles, 4 new F1's but no punctures

eSeM 01-26-2003 12:37 AM

Whats a puncture? ;)

14K miles total.

S02's - 9kmiles
F1's - 5kmiles(rears replaced after 4.5kmiles). 7mm all round.
