Default Mobil 1 15w-50 High Performance Oil?

I just went into Halfords for some oil and saw "Mobil 1" 15w-50 - High Performance Oil (with a Mclaren Mercedes on the label) + it was made in Turkey

What's that all about

Pete

Sure you've been there - but Mobil site mentions this - not the Turkish provenance tho'. Lakoum - or what ever it is - additive?

Didn't fully understand your post, Mike, but thanks for pointing me to the Mobil site (where a search found the following....)

"Fully synthetic 15W-50 Mobil 1 Motorsport is perfect for the highest-revving race engines. Designed to handle the extreme conditions of the toughest motorsport environment, the oil is thin enough to flow quickly around the engine at the lowest temperatures, but as the engine heats up and operates at the highest RPM, it retains its viscosity providing superior protection and maximum power output. It's specifically formulated to cope with the harshest of race track conditions, engineered to withstand internal engine stresses 8,500 times the force of gravity, and designed to remain stable at sump temperatures up to 150

My oil understanding is far from complete but doesn't the 15W imply the oil has poor cold temp. characteristics? I'm sure it is superb for race/track use though.

Edit2: Ignore my previous b#llocks, I should have learnt to use a search engine by now!Mobil 15W-50

If anyone knows which is the most suitable synthetic oil for the S2000 I would be very interested to know - my car is going in for its 9000 mile service (Geo Collins Honda nr. Hailsham - report to follow!) and I intend to take along my own oil for them to stick in.

Anyone know the answer to this one?

Thanks

Ian

Ian:

I use Mobil1 0-40 grade as do others on the board. I think Honda recommend 10-40, which I can't get locally. being slightly thinner it may Vtec better! I wouldn't worry about it unduly, although, surprise surprise, opinions differ.

You'll need to supply 2 can of of Mobil1 by the way as one can doesn't fill up the sump. You'll have a lot left in the 2nd can though for topping up!

Thanks Cedric! That will be another little test for the Service dept then - whether or not they 'remember' to return the unused oil in the 2nd can! (cynical, suspicious old bugger arn't I!)

FWIW my S2000 will be moving onto Mobil 1 0W-40 in the not too distant future.... I find it hard to believe the crap (mineral oil) I'm pouring into this state-of-the-art 9000 rpm engine at the minute, I used better stuff in that POS G reg Nova I was running about in!

0W-40 Mobil 1 it is then!

I can only assume that the break in benifits from the less efficient lubricating properties of the dino-oil (more friction, more wear ). It is odd tho'

There is a load of what looks like authoritative guff here on oil - don't understand myself

Pete: I was wondering whether the Turks intro'd a Turkish Delight additive - obviously dug the wrong word from the wrong neurone - jeez they're dying fast
