Default MOT Question: 3rd brake light

I've got a BYS rep spoiler that is going to cover up the brake light on my boot lid. Does it matter that my car will no longer have a 3rd brake light when it comes to the MOT?

It's a 2003, 52 plate. I never thought anything about it but someone mentioned that it might cause me a problem.

Yes it does AFIK. It was compulsory on all cars manufactured after 1996 IIRC.

No it will be fine, you only need a nearside and offside brake light for an mot

Just be warned when you brake REALLY hard that someone may go into the back of you... As 99% of cars on the road have a working 3rd brake light other motorists assume you have one and may not notice when you're braking...

I suggest you read q12 - if fitted it must work

As i am an mot tester I like to think I know the rules, you do not need a centre brake light for an mot, if fitted it must work yes that is true but it doesn't have to be fitted so if covered by a spoiler and unplugged its a pass

I didn't refer to it being unplugged - merely if fitted it must work

As most cars within the last 15 years have one, a savvy MoT tester should know to check

I wouldn't want to run my car without one - especially for the sake of some tea tray

Tell me Mr MoT man - does that still apply for the so called "day light MoT"?
