Need advice on potential purchase
Hi there,
I've found a decent looking S2K for sale though it's a long trip south from where I am in Scotland. The topside and interior are excellent for the age, however there's definitely some tin worm underneath (photos attached).
Would this put you off, or does it look like surface corrosion that could be sorted with a proper application of POR/Bilt Hamber/Dinitrol? Of note, the last MOT had no advisories, so hopefully stuff like the brake/fuel lines are clear.

If this is "just surface rust" the owner should spend a Saturday morning and put it back to original condition. As one might expect I'd not walk across the street to see this car let alone make a several hour trip.

If underneath of the car requires work then the geo bolts certainly will. It would have to be a great price for me to buy it. There are well maintained cars about, have you tried the S2000 Facebook site?

Yeah, I've been on the hunt for a while now. There's an immaculate 28k, single owner, 2004 car on the S2000 Facebook classifieds, but having spoken to the owner it sounds like there's bidding war going on for it. I figured a higher mileage project car would be the go so long as the condition, service history etc lined up. The car posted above in this thread is comparatively cheap, hence it caught my interest.

You could get the underside and cavities treated for c£500, it's no big deal.
If doing yourself you need wire brush stuff, anti rust primer, dinitrol or waxoyl, overalls, ramps, warm & dry space and time
The arches are a worry though, i would ask for photos of the rear arches inside. It's a 14yo car and has clearly been used in winter.
Surface rust on the rear subframe is very common in the UK

Kind of looks like my old car, perhaps a bit better.
watch out for rear break lines. mine needed replacing at a similar age to this one.
also rear arches. all sorts of nastiness could be going on under the plastic trim. I guess if its cheap enough....
