Need Parts Advice
I have just had my car serviced and the dealer was going to replace the offside rear brake hose but they have found that it is worse than they thought and I now need front to rear and offside rear brake hose. They quoted £500+, so does anyone know where I can get the relevant parts at a sensible price?

If you are after just the rubber brake hose then its probably worth looking at braided lines from Goodridge or Hel.
If your solid brake lines running the length of the car are corroded, then this is another story entirely and a fair amount of work. |
the metal pipes are a pain in the ass, the rears loop over the subframe but it still sounds excessive. its mostly labour and then a bleed (garages charge c£70 for that)
the flexi hoses you are better getting Goodridge than Honda. £85 for the set and a peice of cake to fit and bleed, just need to take care to not round the fittings on the metal pipes which are pretty soft i dont think you can buy the metal pipes, you could buy the tool, fittinga and a reel of pipe for less than 500 though :D |

The pipes and hoses on the OSR are corroded but they could only find a place to join the pipe at the very front of the car because the pipe running the length of the car is also corroded. The price breakdown is £97 for the parts and £453 for the labour, Honda reckon it is a 4.2 hour job. I know a mechanic I can probably get to do it at a more reasonable hourly rate so all I need to know is what exactly do I need to buy.

My advice, get your mechanic to evaluate for himself. Most likely the solid lines and not rubber pipes are looking slightly worse for wear. Its what happened to mine (a car that was used daily i guess) and likely many others sooner or later.He should be able to bend new lines to replace. Not a small job but nor £550 - Honda stealership prices I'm afraid.

Did you notice any increase in sponginess as a result of changing the hard lines to flexi?

You can buy brake piping cheaply (£11 for 25ft at Halfords) and then just get the pipes made up. It's not that difficult and doesn't require expensive tooling.
One problem with using long runs of wire braided flexible pipes is that they shorten when they're under full pressure, so if you go that way don't fit them tightly. Allow a bit of slack. I made that mistake with Goodridge hoses once fitting hydraulics to a racing yacht. Fitted it all beautifully clipping it around various internal components in the boat, and when we took it up to working pressure it shortened, broke all the clips and straightened out all the corners! Goodridge were very apologetic, but as they didn't ever use long runs they were unaware of the issue. |
