am i missing something?

S2000 is band L according to this Select a search : Directgov - Car fuel data, CO2 and vehicle tax tools

that suggests £520 for March 2001 cars on? that would be a huge rise

pre 2001 £245

Yes, the asterisk, there is an exemption for cars registered before 23rd March 2006 which means they are band K.
K*201-225 £305
L 226-255 £520
M Over 255£535£

*Includes cars with a CO2 figure over 225g/km but were registered before 23 March 2006.

Might make ye feel better but its €710 here in Ireland for 99 to early 08 models, late 08/09 ones are a crazy €2,350.

I literally laughed out loud when I renewed online....received a letter on the 6th April saying £295

Went online and its £305..

Re-reading the letter saying that since this letter was printed if the rates changed in the Budget 08th March 2017 then you may be paying more than stated in this letter...

What ..... so you print this renewal off say the 7th March...it lies on a civil servants desk for a month, stuff it in an envelope then post it out....

Christ...how much would the government save if it just closed the DVLA and added 10p to every litre...

I remember thinking this 15 years ago...but I realised 10,000 civil servant jobs were more important...maybe...lol

Had you cancelled your existing tax in March, and then renewed for another 12 months, you would have got the less expensive rate.

The rates went up for cars being taxed for the 1st May onwards. It's pretty simple, really.
