Default No 6th Gear!

Anyone any experience of having a gearbox that refuses to go smoothly into 6th? Could do with knowing what this is likely to cost to fix and generally what is wrong.

At first I couldn't even force it in, but now it does work, but it feels like a bit of a grind in the selecting mechanism going into and coming out of gear.

All other gears are OK - good job I don't use 6th often!

I had the same problem with my 02, except it was with fifth. Started off as just being a bit stiff then eventually got to the stage where it had to be physically forced into and out of gear.

Honda diagnosed collapsed synchros, although they just replaced the gearbox under warranty rather than open it up to investigate.

There's a common problem on pre 01 ATRs with the syncro collapsing into fifth. Parts from Honda are around

Might just be the selector is out of line or it might be worn or knackered synchro as has been suggested.

1) Any better when the box is warm?
2) Any better if you double de-clutch?
3) Have you drained the oil and looked for bits?

Oh - if it's the latter (synchro's) the sooner you sort it the better as there will be bits of broken synchro ring floating about in the oil.

I had this problem I put some slick 50 in the gearbox and ran it in and out of 6th once the oils were up to temp and it seemed to cure it. If the car has been standing for a while it is sometimes stiff to go into 6th but once its been up and down the box a few times its OK again

Doesn't really make any difference whether the gearbox is warm or cold or whether the engine is turning or not. Haven't drained the oil yet; will probably have time to do that at the weekend. In the meantime, am scouting around for a 2nd hand box!
