1) yes
2) it might (certainly wouldn't do any harm)
if you want to cheat a bit without machine polishing try Autoglym Super Resin Polish
it contains quite alot of fillers which will hide (temporarily) some of the swirls/ scratches

I am not looking forward to cleaning my car!! Already done the main stuff by lifting the car and cleaning all the arches with my air tools... compressors are ace

Bugger, was hoping it wasn't laquered with it being a gloss black...would have been a lot easier to polish. I used to use super resin polish all the time, its great stuff with a nice mild cutting action but since I used zymol I haven't gone back

Its washing cars that damages the paint, if you want to see how much damage can be done take you car to the local supermarket and watch them in action. Winter protection will help protect your paintwork, rims and seals through the winter and make it easier to clean in the long run. If you did not have any clearcoat lacquer on your car and it was just the standard two pac your car would be looking a heluva lot worse, just look at some of the older vans that have gone from a crisp white to a powder grey colour.
Machine polish the car and then get some decent protection on top to get you through the rest of our winter.

Same goes for most, but not all, induction kits.
I'd not worry about it if you like the noise, as it'll feel faster.
