Notchy gearchange
I'm a new owner - bought s/h July 2001, (March 2000 model with 2100 miles on clock)
I've noticed that the gearchange "snicks" between changes (most noticeable going from 2 to 3).
Is this normal?
Pete (now with 5,500 miles on clock!)

Guys,
Mine is a 2001 model registered August 2001 - i've now done 2500 miles and i'm finding the gearbox very notchy (especially 1st, 2nd and 3rd). Also I have a metallic sounding rattle at around 4500rpm as you go into VTEC - this rattle is really bad when its cold (obviouly don't use VTEC when cold), but quietens down after a good run to warm up..
Might just be everything settling in, but will take to dealer in another couple of thousand miles for checkup...
Matt.

The notchy gearchange is especially noticeable when the car is new and everything is nice and tight.
It is perfectly normal as in a high performance gearbox, for reasons of gear shift exhilaration and durability, synchros may be constructed out of dual or triple cones. The triple cone on 2nd gear in the S2000 'box makes this gear particularly notchy. First, third and fourth by the way, all have dual cone synchros.
To avoid making this worse i.e. into grinding - do not power shift or skip gears at high rpm. Accelerating hard in 1st, 2nd, 3rd then dropping into 6th say at 70 (ish) in 3rd will wear the synchros.
The s2000 gearbox is designed for sequential shifting.

And don't miss gears on a downshift.....
If you don't match the engine rev's exactly then the car's going to loose it's balance. As the dark nights and wet roads set in, you wont want to be doing that too frequently let alone the stress on the syncros with the engine braking.
The other thing not to do is close the throttle at high revs before depressing the clutch. Causes a lot of transmission stress.

As Paul has said the S2000 is deisgned for sequential shifts. Ideally that includes when you brake to a stop to an extent.
If you brake to stop at a junction, the shift straight to first you'll feel a harder shift action and if you listen carefully you be able to hear the syncromesh whine. Worth remembering - it's easy to avoid putting this extra pressure on the 1st/2nd synchro with a bit of practise
When I was learning to drive, my instructor kept telling me to stop using engine braking because it doesn't light the brake lights. I ignored him - I use the gears fully.
And Cedric/AnDy/Andy please no Micra digs here! If I get started on how bad the Micra gears are compared to the S2000 I'll be typing for a week
