That was a HELL of a noise for hub nut being an 8th of a turn loose. And how did it get that loose anyway? Are they not staked / locked?

Dealer torqued the nut correctly, staked it and the car did another 45k miles before i sold it without it re-occuring.

You'll probably find that the splines are rusty, hence the loud noise. You need to put a new nut on it, torque it correctly and whilst your at it its worth greasing the splines.
If you remove the hub nut you'll find that you can slide the shaft a good way through the splines, certainly enough to work some grease into the splines.
Its the shaft moving slightly in the splines that makes the noise. That's why people often notice a click when the pull away.
