Gave the hub nut a bit of a tighten, was only able to move it about 1/8th of a turn but seemed to have solved the noise.
Really? Does this not perhaps suggest you've masked a problem rather than find it... collapsed wheel bearing? Something else?

That was a HELL of a noise for hub nut being an 8th of a turn loose. And how did it get that loose anyway? Are they not staked / locked?
Common Issue

Honda even released a TSB.

Wow, thanks for that. Interesting!

Something I should get on to doing soon.

But, regardless of that known issue, I'd still be investigating that noise. That has to be a failed component...

I had a similar noise on my 2nd S though nowhere near as loud. Can't remember the mileage exactly but it was around 10k from new. The hub nut hadn't been staked at original manufacture.

Dealer torqued the nut correctly, staked it and the car did another 45k miles before i sold it without it re-occuring.

The drive shaft is splined where it runs through the hub. You can't get access to the bearing surface that way.

You'll probably find that the splines are rusty, hence the loud noise. You need to put a new nut on it, torque it correctly and whilst your at it its worth greasing the splines.

If you remove the hub nut you'll find that you can slide the shaft a good way through the splines, certainly enough to work some grease into the splines.

Its the shaft moving slightly in the splines that makes the noise. That's why people often notice a click when the pull away.
