Got round to checking the service books (I have 3, English, French and Dutch) last night. Interesting reading

The English book is definately 9000 miles for a service with a oil change option at 13,500, 22,500, etc for 'severe driving conditions'

On Page 14 it states 'All cars registered on or after 1998 (1998 civic aerodeck from april) are subject to the new Euro Service schedule. The service interval is 9000 miles or 12 months, whichever comes first'

The UK book covers all models with the S2000 being singled out for platinum plug changes at 54K miles and rear diff fluid at 27K miles.

Now thats interesting, as UK Paul has a 99 and I'm sure he said his service book says 7.5K

Anyway whats also interesting is that this 'Euro Service schedule' is not in line with the Frend or Dutch service books that I have which both state service interval as 15KM/12K miles with optionals at 22.5Kmiles, 37.5Kmiles, etc

The French and Dutch service schedule ties in with the Aus/NZ service schedules but not the US which seems to be unique (and looks even harsher than UK)

So there you have it, either we are harder on our cars in the UK or Honda UK once again are attempting to rip us off by making use service our cars more regular than are EU cousins but then having the cheek to call it a 'Euro Service schedule'

Draw your own conclusions but I guess I'll have to go with the UK 9/18, etc service schedule.

I suspect that the lawyer to person ratio in the US makes Honda a little more cautious

For all I've read so far I think I'll go 9,000 first service, then take the optional oil chnages every 4.5k. Might not make much (if any) difference but it's not much money to pay the S2k back for the fun.

I think people are told different stories as well. When equiring wiht one dealer a few months back they were adamant that it was 7.5k for the first service - Brindley who my car's coming from say 9k.

I'm still intrigued about this service indicator that Paul mentioned.

I am assuming that he was talking about the engine management icon that is displayed when the ignition is on. Re-reading the handbook it states that if this remains on for any time after the engine has started or comes on when driving then you should hightail it to the dealer.

The whole point of this ramble is if such an indicator exists why worry so much about the service intervals if the technology simply says yes please I'm needy & ready

(gosh I wish life was as simply as a service indicator!)

Unfortunately these indicators don't tend to be intelligent, they are usually just programmed to come on at the recommended service interval, but that service interval will be different depending upon where you bought the car i.e. US, UK, EU, etc

So you think that there is a service indicator?

I'd never have asked only Paul mentioned it first!!

Jason,

Thanks for the advice, had a look at the FAQ. Still don't recall ever seeing anything at 7k, coming up close to 14k so I will be more vigiliant from now on!
