I'm getting confused. Are you folks saying I must use a wrench to fit the filter, or can I put it on by hand so long as I follow the 7/8's instructions on the filter itself?

You are talking dangerous shite.

The F20 engine often does have to be treated differently to most other engines because most other engines don't rev as high. Soemthing as simple as an oil filter coming loose can and has wrecked s2k engines.

If you want to risk it, that's your look out. But when you find that a rebuild costs 5 times as much as a rebuilding a normal engine becuase it is that different and built to much finer tolerances so you end up buying a second hand one and fitting that, remember this thread.

don't give duff advice.
Oh good grief!! What and something like an oil filter coming off on any other engine is ok?? It

If you can get the 7/8ths after the contact, with no wrench it's fine.

I need to use a wrench as I can't get in the area to tighten it due to the charger. And usually I'm covered in oil and can't get enough grip.

The advice given by hoppingdeth is half-right; Yes, oil filters are all pretty similar(and have been for quite some time!), but the only instructions I would follow are the OEM instructions on the side of the filter.... if it says contact & 7/8ths, thats what I would do!

This is a pretty good, and comprehensive guide to everything 'oil' for you car.

The great thing about the modern internal combustion engine is the rules are pretty much the same. S2 or Micra.

Some of you should read it.

Sorry hoppingdeth, you've just shot yourself in the foot with that comment!

Tsk Tsk Tsk, comparing the S2000 to a micra. Go wash your fingers, they're talking dirty!

Interesting item on the carbible website... instead of the magnetic drain plug that we all know and hate, there are two companies who offer a sleeve that goes onto the oil filter and magnetises the particles right there in the filter... I might investigate that... prices are quite though for a magnet! they start at $51.79
