Garages use it as a hook for extra business.

If it fails - and you instruct them to do the work the re-test is free. If the car is taken off the premises, then they class it as a new test.

Don't forget you can avoid all these antics by using your Council provided MOT station.

strickly speaking it depends exactly what has failed. some items are not covered on the 'free re-test' bit.

then again, it's down to the testers discression as to what he'll allow pass.

if anyone is interested, then the items checked on MOT are legally covered for 30days. that is, if the lower arm ball joint fails within 30days, and there is no driver-abuse, then the MOT station is liable. i think bodywork is 14days...
