OK!. Want to put a little photo avatar under my name (instead of my ying yang avatar). I know how to do it and also know the restrictions (100 x 100 pixels and 5kb). I have a photo in mind and have reduced it to 100 x 80 pixels. However, file size is 9kb!.

How do I go about reducing the file size of photos to 5kb or lower?. My photo software does not seem to offer this option. Is there any decent freeware software around that can do this or am I missing something here?.

Would love to understand the solution as I would like to use a picture and may also chop and change them a bit but need to be able to reduce file sizes each time!.

Any advice gratefully received!.

Ta,

Neil

There are a number of these on the web if you don't want to fiddle yourself. This lot have a thing called Gifwizard - handles jpg as well - which compresses/ reduces in a no of ways - think they still have a free trial service.

That is probably your answer. Big photos tend to use true colour which means there is a huge palette, basically this means there are many many shades of each colour included in the image. This makes it hard to compress the image as compression algorithms are based on repetitive data - the more repetitive the data the more it can compress.

For a small picture try reducing the colour count/depth to 256, most apps (e.g. Paintshop Pro) will have the option on the menus, others will allow you to choose as you save the image.

I would also recommend reducing the colour count of the original photo and then reduce the photo size, less chance of distortion that way.

HTH,

- Adam.

Depends on what software you are using. I use Photoshop 6.

i reduce the size first using the image, image size option.

Then play about by using the save for the web button as this can be used to reduce the quality, but keep the pic in good nic still. See LB's and PL's avatar.
