YOur userID and password are stored in a cookie that is in the temporary folder for IE5, if you either run the Disk Cleanup utility or manually delete all your cookies (something I do at work to make it harder for my boss to see if I have been surfing at all) then you will have to re-enter your password next time you come back to the site. Cookies also need to be enabled with IE5 settings. I think also if you turn on Autocomplete this doesn't use cookies but will remember your password when you type in your username.
Of course some of the above (disk cleanup) applies only to Windows (98 and 2000 I think, not sure about 95), so if you are on a Mac, ignore that bit
Hope that helps, I never have that problem with IE5.5, unless caused by me.
