Either pick up a decent set of low mileage pre-facelift suspension or a decent set of coilovers (the latter would be my suggestion).

You don't have to go low with coilovers and my KW's ride better than any OEM suspension I've had.

So in summary is it safe to say that out of the box the 08/09 cars have the best handling characteristics of all the years?

i.e. Firm enough, but without the tendency to oversteer (in inexperienced hands)

'Best' is too subjective a term, but probably the best mix/compromise. I suppose Honda thought they could afford to go stiffer again as VSA was standard fitment on 08/09 cars.

Just the engine falling apart to worry about

You've probably done the right thing with an 05 upgraded as you have.
