Default Quiet Tinny Metalica noise 3.2-3.6k RPM

Before anyone says anything, it's not clutch buzz. Whether the clutch is in or out, in gear or out of gear, the engine makes a fairly quiet but very metalic sounding noise only at 3.2-3.6krpm. If I have the radio on I probably wouldn't notice it and if I am giving it "the beans" on the way up the rev range again, it doesn't notice.

I'm thinking my valves need adjusting... Car has 113k on the clock and they've not been done. Any other suggestions?

Exhaust heat sheild or early collapse of the cat? Mine started to go around that mileage..

I'd check the valve clearances regardless at your mileage but "tinny" vibration is typically heat shields.

I had a chunk of concrete end up under the car at speed and it broke the heat shield bolts on the catalytic converter (and not the oil sump or gearbox!) and it rattled. Easy to shake it and the other heat shields to see of they're loose.

I did wonder if it may be the cat, guess this gives me a good chance to test a decat pipe after the MOT in a couple of weeks

Probably - Cat Stevens was far more tinny-sounding than Metallica.

I've actually just picked up my S, (intro thread not yet written - no decent pictures because I've been too busy driving it!) and I've noticed the same issue that you're describing; only really noticeable if I lift off and the rpm drops through that rev band when I'm not on the gas. It is there (but less noticeable) if I'm sitting on the throttle in the band. I'll be interested to hear what you find!

Welcome!

This again sounds very much like Cat starting to fail. But certinaly worth a look at the surround heat sheilds to make sure they're not making contant
