Unhappy Rear number plate grit catcher

In the process of washing the car today I found I had half a tonne of grit coming out between the rear number plate unit and the bumper!

Looks as though grit, from a newly tarmac'd and gritted road I drove through last week, has found its way from my tyres into the rear bumper and become wedged in the gap with only one avenue for escape, it has taken me ages to get it all out and MAN what alot there was !

Is this a known ? Drive through grit = spend ages easing stones out ?

All S's are prone to this - they love scooping them up as you go along.

Valeted many an S and they are all the same. A small hobby

Just done the same. How does the plate holder come off?

PITA if I recall held on in various places and easy to break if not done slowly and carefully.

Best option is to take a look at a service manual for the answer before attempting it.

Or get under the car and take a look from the reverse.

There's a couple of screws on the back of the bumper. The most sensible way to remove the plate holder is to remove the bumper itself which only takes 15 minutes

Removing the rear lights makes putting the bumper back on easier

Yup - already had a look at removing just the plate holder, not easy especially if the securing fixings are rusty - much quicker to just remove the bumper.

LL yours should NOT be suffering from rusty clips just yet

This is the chap that does it!
You can remove it with the bumper on but it is a PITA
Easier to take the bumper off and fill hte gaps with foam
