with or without external amp?
apparently HU along with external amp isnt as important than speakers direct from HU.
external amp; i'd just go with one that has the features you want and design you like. i've never bothered with the EQ features on my pioneer; just use the pre-set EQ settings and auto-gain.
there is something todo with RCA outputs though; some HU's have better pre-out RCA connections. i think it was down to voltage rather than anything else. 5v pre-outs seem to be the desirable ones as thats what i have on mine

Best thing I did to mine was put some speakers behind the seats. Sound quality isn't great but at least I can hear them now. £20 + £120 for an Alpine MP3 HU + dash controls (modifry)

...wasnt sure if we've pursuaded you to go amp.
i think it took me a day todo my setup which including modding and planning layout once i had the car apart.
kenwood have a fairly good rep around that price mark.
pioneer HU's also worth considering but im not sure on their units around that price range.
Pioneer DEH-8300SD looks quite good on http://www.caraudiodirect.co.uk/specials.php (i use CarAudioDirect - i like 'em.)
