Roof Trim - Safe to remove?

Roof Trim - Safe to remove?
Hi all,
Currently getting quotes to repaint the car, and I plan to ensure all the mouldings are removed before the work starts.
I believe the trim that runs around the car on the boot deck is just garnish, but can someone confirm that? I want to remove the trim price and reinstall the roof prior to painting but need to check that the trim doesn't provide any weather protection.
At first glance it does just look cosmetic, bit would be useful to confirm. Don't expect it's too difficult to remove once the roof is removed? (Had it apart plenty of times, but never interfered with that price of trim)
May try cleaning it up as I'm sure a replacement is astromical from Honda in terms of cost.

I recently removed that piece of trim before having some body work done and it is garish rather than anything else but it does divert water to a certain degree.
When I last looked it was about £250 from Honda!

Last time I had the roof off I tried removing it but was hard, I didn't spend time at it as I only wanted to see for a future repaint, how'd you do it?
