S2000 in Evo magazine
Under subject of cars that will cost you nothing to run for a year*....
...erm yeah right! *depreciation |
Calipers are my biggest annoyance!
|
I have to say I've had mine for a year and apart from parts I've fitted and servicing it has cost me nothing apart from the of top up of oil, top car I'd say
|
free insurance? :D
it is a cheap car to run imo. even servicing, but's in no corsa 1.4 diesel |
If you ignore insurance, servicing, fuel and depreciation, then they have a good point.
|
Try running a Boxster or a Z4 for a bit! The cheapest service I had on a boxster was £300 and that wasn't at a dealership. I've been quoted 90 quid at my local Honda Dealership for my 99k service if I take my own oils.
The car is the bargain of the century. |
Has nobody read the footnote on the post that says they're talking about depreciation?
Mind you, I don't believe that, either. |
mines costing me a fortune to run.
bought last march for 7k tax - £265 Insurance - £650 service - £300 new front calipers - £160 arb droplinks all round - £60 tct - £150 used wheels and tyres - £550 rear tyres - £250 Geometry adjustment - £120 fuel - £30 per week oil - £15 every 1500 miles Depreciation probably £1000 so thats nearly 5k in just under a year! Doesnt stop me loving the car though |
^^^^ Either you vtec every gear change or your car guzzles oil!!
|
im sure thats about the average 1 litre every 1500 miles, mind you it hasnt used any during these winter months
|
To be fair, they may have a point. An unmodified recent unbent example might well be worth something in the future since Honda's VTEC was slain by the fuel efficiency police.
Now, where did I leave that gold bullion I was planning on exchanging for tax... Ah, here it is! Next to my spare kidney (insurance) |
Mine has been fantastic...
Owned for just over 8 yrs. Car 11 yrs old with 105k Depreciation (est) - £7k Insurance - £300 Tax - £200 Servicing usually around £250 28-30mpg Only big problem - bushes - around £1k. Apart from that just routine servicing and wear and tear items. Show me another 240bhp sports car you can run for that kind of money :) |

Apart from fuel economy :D They are dire on fuel and like to drink some oil too.
Other than that, I think the RX8 will be closest in cost terms although it's a (4 door) coupe and there are probably many other cheap(ish) to run coupes on the market. |
Depreciation about £8K in 5 years.
Replacement gearbox and clutch, about £1.5K. Replacement engine, about £3.5K. And it needs the steering rack replacing, and all the calipers could do with be refurbed/replaced... All my bushes were fine though. |
RX8? 17mpg - and depreciation which sees low mileage 04 cars worth under £5k now. And about £15 a week on oil too!
|
Even tyres are cheap if you run the 16" wheels!

That's staggering depreciation but also seems the bargain of the century! |
People just don't want a car that does 17-18mpg at this end of the market.
|
RX8's depreciate like a stone. Mate has an 05 plate same year as mine now on sale at £4795 at a dealer. Low mileage, 2 owners, Mazda and him. 40,000. Brand new it was £24k.
I won't tell you what the trade in figure was as it is hard to see a grown man cry.... but starts with a 3..... |
Ouch!
|
Yup, at work there was an 04 RX8 with 50k miles for sale @ £3995 ono
|
I had an RX8 before this S2000. 04 plate. £26k with all extras. Sold for (drum roll...)
...£4700 last year. Private. I'm glad tho, I had a hunch that the engine was about to go, making the car "uneconomical to repair" And the S2000 has better fuel economy, not that we care about such things :-) |
does the s2000 feel faster than the rx8?
|
My brother has an RX8 and yes its quick, probably similar speed to the s2k but doesnt feel it, the power deliver is more linear so there is no surge like when vtec kicks in.
I told him about my findings tonight and he is pig sick as he bought his 54 plate 3 years ago for 11k and now it looks like it worth nothing. I told him to not sell it and perhaps keep it a a track car. Do the engines in the Rx8 need the same rebuild after a certain mileage like the rx7s? |

Friend just traded his 07 plate RX-8 in....13k miles, one owner.
£9k i think. He bought new, although pre-registered, so got a 6month old car with 7 miles on the clock with a list price of £23k for £15k. owned for 2.5 years and lost £6k...pretty good value in that sense for a new car. But the fuel was a bit of an issue for him and he now needs more space.... As for speed...it was fast, but I showed him a clean pair of heels on numerous occasions...no where near as raw as the S either, quite a pleasant cruiser considering... |

And the rx8 wasn't new, otherwise he would have lost £14k in 2.5 years :o
|
Don't want to piss on your party, but you will get a rude shock when you come to sell .(Unless you only paid £7k eight years ago

Paid £12995 all those years ago. For a 3 year old car - bargain. I think it was just about the cheapest seen on the board at that time, because it had done 60k motorway miles.
I value the car around £5-6k now. Immaculate, standard, FHSH only Honda parts used for any repairs. Brand new OEM springs and dampers all round 40k ago, bushes done. Etc Mine was immaculate with FHSH, unworn seats, good rubberand unmolested. Still only got £9.5k after bargaining hard. ps And it was the fastest colour.Moonrock/Red :D |
I sold my Impreza, kept the money on hand, drove round in a £200 Nissan Bluebird for 3 months until the right car appeared in winter time. That Bluebird was the worst car I've ever driven. Worth it to catch the bargain though :)
Honda replaced all the suspension FOC when we found a suspension spacer at 65k miles :yikes: |

The feeling I got with the RX8, and the reason I sold, was looking down the barrel of a £5k bill for a new engine. They haven't sorted out the wankel engine-wear issues.

Honda PDI,y ou couldn't make it up!
It was only when I took it for a second opinion at another dealer that they found it. Cue lots of goodies from HUK - new suspension all round, cd changer, extended warranty, new roll over hoop to replace damage that happened at an earlier dealership, more extended warranty, replaced suspension arm, geo, .... etc etc :D |

The thing that really annoyed me was that I took it to the dealer 3 times in my first year of ownership complaining that the suspension wasn't right.
That is £46/week or £200/month just in depreciation!! How can you say that that is good value? confused.gif
Not many brand new 200+ bhp coupes available for that sort of money.... On a lease, that car would be £350/month min, so yeah, £200 a month is a pretty good deal I would say. |
The PCP cost of a £15k RX8 will not be £350/month.
|
it was a £23k RX8. He bought it with 7 miles on the clock for £15k which makes it good value.
at £23k obviously would not be good value, but it wasn't. |
