Default S2000 MY09 Year. Needs new engine. Recall?

Hi all.

I have commented in a few threads about my car needing a new engine, but as this is running on ( and likely on for several more weeks ) and news of the same problem happening to another car. I think a seperate post is warranted.

So.. story to date. ( sorry if you have heard bits on other threads )

Got my GT100 9th May
Early August I picked up that it was making a rattling noise. It was getting louder and louder.

21st August - Got an appointment at Crown Bushey
The mechanic ( not Jorge) listened - heard the noise and decided that he didn;t want to put it on the ramps. Instead - wait a couple of weeks for Jorge to listen to it.

2nd September - Jorge listens to it. He thinks it is the hydralic tensioner.

9th September - Jorge fits hydralic tensioner ( I get to say Hi to Dan Hale too ).
Jorge advises problem is still there. I advise that it is a new car. It is a Honda - not some French or Italian POS - and I have expectations that the engine will not make strange unaccounted for noises.

Jorge keeps the car overnight

10th September - Jorge checks for valve clearances and does other checks.

Geta phone call from Jorge - He has used a directional noise finder - to establish that the noise is coming from the engine.

The car needs a new block. Honda UK have approved. 4 -5 week wait for the bit.

Now. I have heard that my case is not unique and that the Honda Institute are looking at another 09 car with the same fault.

From hearing 3rd hard - A bearing is breaking up. ( unconfirmed )

Now - the question is - How many of us Brits with 09's could this affect.
If you have a GT100 - odds are... same batch of parts... it could well be a problem for you.

I'm sure it could touch other markets too.

Is this going to be the rather more expensive version of "my roof is torn"

Most interesting...

But 2 cases would seem to be very small for now.

If it's a bearing, it would no doubt be a sub supplier issue. Probably some dodgy Chinese material

Keep us posted though.

Is the car driveable pending the new engine becoming available?

If not, are they providing you with a replacement vehicle?

Can't seem them doing a recall. They cost a HUGE amount to do. And as I understand it, there's nothing particular to the GT100 in the engine, so it won't just be 100 cars that are affected.

Frustrating for you, I realise. But on a pure economics level, I'm sure they'll decide to deal with it as they occur.

I'd say a ticking noise turning into a knocking noise does sound like a bearing on the way out. They'll never recall for it though

They have offered an Astra or a Focus. And after arguing a Mondeo.

I'm actually using Gaxxy's Accord Type S for now.
Great car BTW if you need a motorway cruiser.

Yes - the GT100's are no different. But to have 2 of them with the same fault at the same time points to a defective component that may well affect others.

Thought it best to give the heads up. As mentioned in the first post - I can see this turning into the struggle similar to the worn roof.

If the genie is out of the bottle early - the customers can have a better case IF or WHEN it happens to them.

I can visualise it happening down the line and the "shrug shoulders" treatment given.

Does the noise sound like a "tappity" noise? I think my MY09 makes a "tappity" noise!! Thought nothing of it.

Agreed. Forewarned is forearmed.

I know from a previous job where I had some passing involvement with recall issues that the costs are monumental. It boils down to the bottom line and, if there is no wider regulatory or possibly reputational issue to worry about, it almost always works out cheaper to offer a no-quibble repair as and when it arises rather than undertake a recall.

Hope they make the process as quick and painless as possible for you, Gas.

bummer
I feel for you
It may be a batch of bad bearings causing a spike in failures.
2 so far is not going to cause a recall though!
