s2000 rattle @ 3000 RPM then dissapears
 

Hi All,

I was wondering if someone might be able to point me in the right direction, I have a 99 s2000 on 85K, i have noticed a rattle at around 3000 rpm it then goes at around 4500 rpm, it seems to be worse once the car is warm. so far i have done the following, Oil change with genuine honda filter, removed the tct, sand blasted as per the DIY post, https://www.s2ki.com/forums/s2000-un...repair-808383/ removed the rockercover check the valve springs, checked the camgear pully and washer as per another post there is no play in this https://www.s2ki.com/forums/s2000-un...-661922/page5/.

Could be slack timing chain, or something loose/worn with the chain guides.

Did you get any swarf when you changed the oil?

Also try taking the auxiliary drive belt off and see if the noise changes, could be another indicator.

Thanks @TangoVTEC No Swarf when I changed the oil, the chain itself does seem reasonably tight but I guess it’s impossible to tell unless you expose the entire chain. Haven’t taken the aux belt off as yet will try that next weekend. It does sound like it’s the cam chain but I can’t understand why the noise would disappear after going past the Rev range.

Check your dipstick has not popped up, if it has then that may well be the problem...

I was actually wondering today if i might have just been unlucky with the TCT, i wonder if it would be worth buying a brand new one from honda to see if the issue went away, I appreciate that the TCT might be on maximum adjustment already but might be worth a shot. does anyone know if its possible to see if the tct is on maximum adjustment?

Having now listened to both videos it sounds like tct noise to me, however that noise usually goes away above idle :ponder:

Could be TCT noise certainly, but it’s definitely at the worse end of the spectrum compared to others I’ve heard, and as said; usually goes away with increased revs (and oil pressure).

Worth a quick removal and inspection (with worm gear sanding) just to see if it gets better/worse?

If so, you could have identified it. While the TCT is out, you can also push inwards on the chain guide to make sure the movement is smooth and not excessive.

So have taken the drive belt off the car with no real change so decided to go for the tct repair as per the diy. When it was open I put a little gear oil on the worm gear. Put it back in and the noise disappeared, have now done about 100 miles and the noise is just starting to come back but is so much quieter than before. Not sure if this is something that will get worse but I guess we will have to wait and see. Now starting to think that it could be the actual chain guide although it did feel okay when I had the tct out. Any help would be greatly appreciated :)
