S2K Tuning with ME221

Recently had my car tuned and set up on the fantastic ME221 from Motorsport Electronics. Really chuffed with the results, with this being the first dedicated ECU for prefacelift S2K's. The support/advice from Motorsport Electronics have been excellent, helping me get the most out of the ECU. Major benefit of having a UK based company on hand who are willing to help their customers. Its good to know that the car is still healthy and the AFR's have been smoothed out throughout the band. Ready for the season of racing ahead.

If anybody is looking for an S2000 ECU, I can not recommend Motorsport Electronics enough. Its so reassuring to know the chaps there are ready to help with their awesome bit of kit. Cheers guys.

Looks great !
I was thinking about going with the doctronic proecu-s2k, but this one can also be great !

Does the dashboard coolant temperature gauge work well ?
Any modification on sensors ?
Dos it retain OBD fully functional ?

I'd be interested to hear your thoughts on this as this was the ECU I was planning on using, after it got some good reviews in the MX5 community.

Looking at the photos, you look to be still N/A, so what results did you get? I hear you can pick up a chunk of torque in the mid range even though it may only be a few HP at the top end.

They sell this as a PnP solution, and say that it utilises all the stock sensors and dash functionality, is this correct? What kind of issues did you experience with it when installing and setting up?

Thanks

C

Hi MT, I just pinged you on FB post about the ecu - Agreed with ChrisPackit - does the temperature gauge work correctly and wideband?

@ChricPackit - The gains will be in the midrange, with just a few horses at the top - the benefit was a reduced vtec cross over too. I had full supporting mods too - full exhaust, decat, larger throttle body, CAI. Good for a few more horses and throttle response.

ECU is plug and play, uses the factory harness. No modification to wiring or sensors. No OBD functionality, however with a cheap windows laptop/tablet you can inspect everything the ECU is doing including diagnostics.

No major issues with set up or tuning, everything went a breeze. Had a small issue with one setting, which ME put right straight away.

Coolant gauge I would say, rises slightly faster than the OEM unit (quicker up to 3 bars), however this can be adjusted in the ECU I believe (can decide when each bar is lit up). Crank is like AEM with a double cycle before firing.

As Nomadic says, its mainly mid range.

tbh the Honda ECU fires up too soon, good to get some oil circulating while the ME221 works out where it is in the timing cycle and just love this first road test vid, the lower vtec engagement does seem to make a difference

More oil around first is always good. Just to note for those unfamiliar with how Non OEM fires up. Lowering the VTEC feels like it improves the linearity of response in the revs. With the foot buried it just keeps pulling, no lul before VTEC.

A sort of cringe on starting my <oem ecu> S from cold,as its starts too quick and revs tooo much

I've just taken delivery of an ME221 ECU and am wondering if there's anything else sensible to change before getting the car mapped.

It's staying NA for the moment (boost is a dream, but a long way away) and I'm aware I'm not going to magically get loads of power, but if there's any changes that would work well in conjunction with a remap, I might as well try and do things in the right order! I've got a long arm intake, decat & exhaust but standard manifolds. Would a larger throttle body make any difference at this point in my journey? Anything else I should be considering?

Wideband O2 sensor to make the most of the VE based tuning. And VTEC dropped to 4k ish.

From my research, exhaust manifold and larger single exit exhaust are the next things, but it's a balance with noise. Anything else is incremental and for NA, the OEM intake plenum and throttle body appear to be very hard to beat. TB might make it feel more powerful, but most likely it's just reaching max flow at a smaller throttle opening, hence feeling 'peppier'.
