Ive a clio 1.2 tce its got more torque than my s2000 at 171 lbs/ft

alternatives to the s2000 imo are, Elise, rx7, mx5. All of which return half decent mpg and could carry a bike

I've recently bought a Skoda Octavia vRS Tdi CR as a daily driver. At 170bhp and shit loads of torque from a VAG diesel engine it's great.

With a revo stage one easily taking it to 215bhp. Even with spirited driving you'll get 43mpg and on the motorway 50-55mpg can't go wrong.

As for a direct "sports car" replacement imo a Lotus Elise hard option.

Another vote for the Clio, 38 MPG, cheap to buy, cheap to run and I didn't have any issues with it. Even when hammering it the MPG was always north of 32.

Great fun in the twisties and they really do grip despite being a front driver and the engines are strong and can take a hammering aslong as you service them regularly.

I bought my 172 for £1500 and sold it for £1600 after spending over a grand on it - so careful about how you spend on it!

It will feel like a down grade from your S2 but it sounds like it could be the motor for you. A lovely late 182 with low miles, Full Fat with Cup Packs but with cambers and aux belt needing a swap (so you can get it done fresh and by a reputable specialist) is what I'd be looking for, shouldnt cost more than £3000.

I replaced my Silverstone with a 172 and I did love it, but I felt I was trying to convince myself it was the right car for me. Did the full hit with wheels, coilies, exhaust (subtle not loud) and intake but still didn't hit the mark and most of that is prob down to putting the roof down!

So now I'm back and have a Berlina S2!

Choose wisely!!

Cheers guys, the clio is a good shout. Need to take one for a spin. I actually chopped a mk5 golf gti in for the s2000 last year, and do no regret it at all, it was like driving a household appliance!

here's what I've had over the last 3-4 years https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/...m/car-list.jpg

Will report back my findings...!

Same boat! I can't justify the cash for the use it would get.

I quite like the fiesta models OR even something like a E46 318i? Really tempted to get a fiesta MK5.

I personally wouldn't go French, to me they're a minefield just like TVR's are imo.

I've not owned anything french but my old man has had a couple of french cars and I doubt he'll be going back to one! If you're lucky enough to find a diamond in the field of rotten oysters then it would be down to whether you personally want one or not.

I'm not selling my S for a few thousand years or so, but if I did I'd look at something reliable, relatively fast, cheap to run (in terms of maintenance and repairs), maybe a turbo which can be easy to mod (even a simple remap) and DEFINITELY something YOU want. (And make sure it's within your budget of course )

Well that's just my own opinions but as long as you're happy with whatever you get then we'll all be happy for you

I've had French cars for the past 10years,and to be honest they have been fairly reliable.they seem to be cheaper to mod compared to jap stuff,if modding is your thing,I'm sure engine dynamics do a drive in drive out turbo conversion for around £2-2500.
If I was looking for a cheaper alternative to an s2000 it would definately be a 182

French cars unreliable?? My saxo vtr had 146k on it when I sold it.... my clio 97k on it.... 20k with ko3 turbo!

French are reliable if treated well. Not really an alternative to a rwd 2 seater though....
