Thumbs up So got my S, Any tips to pass on?

Hey all,

Got my S last week & so far absolutely loving it !!!

(Although did feel a bit daft with the roof down last night on my way back from Norwich, but hey thats what the heaters are for!!)

Anyway, I've looked at the FAQ & read loads of posts, but still got loadsa generic questions.

So, after some advice/recomendations etc on the following:
-------------------------------

General Maintenance

Do's & Dont's

Cleaning Interior/Exterior & Overall Care of in,out & soft top

Fuel & oil needs

Think that should cover most of it.

Some history - '02 berlina black with Black/red interior, 46k now, i'm 3rd owner. FHSH from new bar last. Unfortunately, its a bit dirty now & wanna make sure everything protected etc & cleaned before the winter well & truly sets in.

Sorry if a rather vague post (tis a monday)

Cheers all

P.S. - came from a scooby last & that had "quite" a few do's & dont's

Oil - check every week and use good quality Fully synthetic.
Observe service intervals do not leave late!!!!!

Fuel - good quality 97 RON (Branded stuff from big names)

Cleaning - depends how much of an anorak you are.

Minimum for protection twice a year.
Wash (use mitt plus good quality car shampoo)
Clay (Megs Quik clay is good)
Polish (if paint is dull or swirly) (Megs Deep Crystal Step 1 and step 2) this step is not mandatory you need to look at the paint finish.
Sealant (Autoglym Ultra deep shine or Poor boys or a Megs glaze)
Wax - a good wax to finish off. (Megs deep crystal step 3)

Repeat Wash weekly and Wax monthly.

The beauty of all the above is that you can ge them all in Hellfrauds. There are better / different products out there but they will probably be mail order.

Hood,

303 Protector or Ragg topp or Renovo depending on how bad. If hood is in good nick then 303 or Raggtopp twice a year.

I personnaly clean with Ragg Topp cleaner Once a year and apply Ragg Topp protector twice but my car is low milage and no longer a daily driver.
You need to mail order Ragg Topp but I've done it by sending the cash (euros) in the post and it works OK. Bloke even put the change in the box!!!!

- Check the oil every week along with tyre pressures.
- Don't VTEC until you have three bars on the tempertaure gauge.
- Take it easy in the wet/greasy conditions, especially on cold tyres.
- I now use V-Power all the time, but there's no harm in using normal unleaded if you get caught short.
- Enjoy the car, and get the roof down as often as possible

1. General Maintenance - Put fuel in it (petrol) service it as required, change tyres as required, jobs a good un.

2. Do's - let the engine and tyres get warm then drive it like you stole it.
Dont - Crash it (it gets expensive)

3. See Tango Man.

4. Decent Quality petrol pref 98 octane but 95 works fine, as for oil, good quality oil either semi or fully synthetic and stick to manufacturers reccomended grades.

Oh and

read the section on winter driving taffy, you had the benefit of 4 wheel drive last time around and depending upon how much experience you have with rear wheel drive you could be surprised by the way the S behaves in damp or cold conditions. Its part of the appeal the way the car can be adjusted with the throttle but it can be VERY lively, even exiting a junction on a light throttle can have the back stepping out which is smile inducing when you intend it but trouser filling if you didnt !
Ive had a lot of rear wheel drive cars and the S is by far the most likely to slide the rear.
As i said earlier this is apart of the appeal of the car, the rawness is what makes it such a blast, just be careful or get yourself to a secluded space with lots of run off and just have a try to see how easy it is to get sliding so that you know what to expect..
cheers KP

Don't start modifying it. It's a slippery slope.

I suggest you have a good read of Jonner's "blown my engine" thread, and the latest "spun my S so it must be the tyres" thread (it's getting towards winter so there'll be one along any minute).
