Space saver with Spoon calipers

I understand that the space saver should not be used on the rear of the car due to the diff, so if you have a rear puncture you put the front wheel on the rear and the spacer saver on the front. But I'm pretty sure that I won't fit the space saver on the front now due to the Soon calipers, so should I just remove it and drive around with a can of foam in the boot/area where the space saver was?

You could try and fit it, see if it still goes but if not I'd do as you suggest. no point carrying one that doesn't fit :)

My M hasn't got a space saver either, just comes with a pump and a can of pop from the factory.

Just join the RAC and ask for a low loader should that situation ever arise.

I'm already with the RAC.

Worst "I've got spoon calipers" thread ever!! :tipwink:

If it comes to it get recovered.

Is it possible to get a different space saver wheel with a bigger offset that will fit the wheel as well as the boot?

Anfrax666 08-13-2015 05:09 AM

Ive got Spoon calipers and at the time had OEM 16" wheels so fitted 15mm front spacers. With the 15mm spacers the spare wheel does fit, rather begrudgingly I must add as I hoped for an excuse to remove it and get a pump and tyre weld. I haven't driven with the spare fitted, just got curious so jacked the car up, bolted on spare and it spun freely!

I've got 10mm spacers on the front of mine, can you remember how much clearance you had with the 15mm spacers?

WinFreak 08-13-2015 05:13 AM

Could always chuck an extra 5mm spacer in with the spare wheel I guess

Ah yeah, simple things. :)

Remove it, save weight, and call the RAC for recovery https://www.s2ki.com/s2000/public/st...t/thumbsup.gif

Never thought of this. As I will be fitting 330mm discs and brembo calipers, my space saver has no hope in fitting. Time to get rid of some weight.

It was difficult to see due to the design, but from what I can see it was more than the ~3mm on OEM 16" wheels. If I get a chance I can check over the weekend.

I put the space saver on the rear of mine not long after I had it. The car didn't explode or flip over or do anything bad.

I'd just put it on the rear. You're not going to be driving miles or at high speed with a space saver anyway.

Its not great for the diff though...

As long as you don't cane it it should be fine, as the stress through the worm gears is really only an issue when one wheel is losing traction. And who would cane it with a spacesaver on?!?

CHIPPO 08-14-2015 11:41 PM

Er worm gears ? , it's a crown wheel and pinion , isn't it ?

I think a worn and wheel even with a 3 start worm would give a hell of a reduction

Torsen diffs work by means of worm gears between the two drive shafts instead of planetary or bevel gears like you would get in an open diff. There's still a crown wheel and pinion to transmit drive from the prop shaft to the diff.

I assumed the talk of it being bad for the diff is because a space saver will make the drive shafts move at different speeds all the time, even in a straight line.
