Hi all .
I had a bit of misfortune taking off the coil pack clips as 2 of them broken, so I've ordered replacements and will follow the LHD way of swapping them over - otherwise I have a trusted mechanic that will sort.
However taking out the first plug was odd.. now I'm thinking I've taken the sleeve out.
I did order the correct ones but I'm puzzled as they are a different thread size ...
The one on the left I have taken out the block, middle plug was an old one of my 06 reg. The far right is the new plug.
Any of you guys help with this ?
Diameter of the far left is about 1.5cm, other are around 1.3cm.
Is there a different thread size for these NGK's or am I being thick ? It simply won't screw into the block.
This is an 05 reg, so unsure if the threads are bigger. The old plug doesn't have a floating washer either.
TIA
Thanks.. the more I look at it, I think it is a sleeve on the plug. I've absolutely no idea what size the sleeve is, or even how to remove the damn thing to re-use. Bollox!
Any ideas or is this one for a workshop?
I've already pre-warned my techie nearby and he will have a look next week.
Removing the plug wasn't the usual "snap" then unscrew, it felt like I was cross-threading it however after stopping. I carried on slowly and measured the depth of the plug, and could see it was coming out compared to the one fastened in cyl 2.
I haven't took the others out yet to compare, but might now just leave it. On inspection the plug doesn't look that bad and it's about 25000 miles old /5 years
Yes looks like you backed out the thread insert from a previous repair.
Take picture from above the electrode, should be able to spot an outer shell.
Correct thread size is 14mm x 1.25, you could try google time sert 14mm x 1.25 and maybe find correct replacement.
Yeah not an easy job to get off without damage, probably best to get a new one and the tool to install it.
Not sure what manufactures are common in the UK but here is an example on a kit https://eshop.wurth.co.uk/Product-ca...5Yds1aGU69xyLa
A well equipped machine shop or similar might have the tools, just need to get a new insert with correct lenght.
Thanks. I wondering whether it will be safe enough to screw this back in now to take the car 1/2 a mile to my trusted indy. Or if I should flatbed it?
It does go in but because it's a different thread type or due to being a bit fatter and , unsure if this is going into a helicoil, it's a bit stiffer than a normal screw in plug.
Times like this a scope would help to check. I can almost see the threads down the hole, so I might risk it, not sure.
The difference in colour on the spark plug thread suggests that it may have been applied with thread lock. However it would be almost impossible for the sleeve not to come out with the plug unless it was property bonded on place to the block.
The threads on the sleeve don't appear to be damaged, but trying to understand if it needs re-tapping or not will be a mechanic opinion?
Difficult to see. I may just wind it down very, very carefully. I'll have a chat with my techie today
Begs another question: I can see there are spark plug sleeves available, however, is it not safe for a new sleeve to be installed whilst on the plug, because it them becomes the spark plug thread, or should the sleeve be only installed first (to avoid damage to the ally block).?
Surely it would need a bit of purchase anyway to be put it.
