I had a snooper for around 8 years. I got bored of the problem Floppy describes - you were alerted that a ticket would be coming, not alerted to adjust your pace.

I stopped using camera detectors for that reason and i've yet to discover a device which served as anything other than just a reminder. I was so concerned about the legal ramifications it scared me out of it too.

I find staying observant and keeping to the speed limits works very well and costs nothing.

It's ultimately the best way. Why are you driving around concentrating on your speedo? Are you not a competent enough driver to know how fast you're going? (Hint: If you're not accelerating or decelerating, it doesn't change).

I had a radar Snooper, but soon tired of it telling me I was passing a shop or a set of traffic lights. I did have a GPS only one, but it only works for fixed cameras, which you can see easy enough and you'll get to know the ones in your area anyway. 4 years ago I was caught twice in 2 months: once by a van, and once by a car following me. Maybe a radar detector would have told me about the van, if I hadn't ignored it from all the false alarms. Clearly a GPS based device would have done nothing.

Road Angel .. works well and if it bleats for a mobile camera, stamp on the brakes hard!

Whether an individual chooses to use cam detectors or not does not address the op's question.

For the minimal cost of a phone based system, you will get a little reminder that a cam is in the vicinity. I'd give one of them a try. Really useful and a massive 99p. Damned coding grabbers.
