possible play in steering column universal joint? just throwing ideas out there, but could account for a single click when turning left or right as the slack is taken up in the joint??

Yup - check the spline clamp is tight.

I get a tiny knock from the rack - it's been like that for years.

But generally check wiring/bolts first.

A close friend (who's a mechanic) will be checking over the problem tomorrow.

I'll keep you updated.

Can steering racks fail as a result of a knock? I have no idea what a failed steering rack sounds like...There is no play in the wheel, if it wasn't for the click I'd be non the wiser.

it wouldn't fail as per say, the rack will still function but if the joint isn't tight or needs replacing you will just have a tad bit of slack hence the click (if it is indeed this causing the click) turning from one direction to the other.

Great info, cheers.

Is the joint difficult to tighten and if it needs to be replaced is it costly?

It's a clamp with a bolt through it, round the spline on the end of the steering rack.

Shove your head where your feet should go & you can see it.

Mine does it and i suspect the clock spring is what's making the noise. It's definitely not the column joint anyway, it's a plastic like sounding click from right behind the steering wheel when you gently waggle the wheel from left to right when stationary.

What's the clock spring and where does it live? Can it be tightened or replaced?

It is not a trivial task on most cars though I don't know about the S2000 - I suggest you do a search on this forum first
